I’ve had the New Nexus 7 32GB for about a week now and here are some of my observations.
I’ll start off with the things I like about it.
1. I really like the new restricted profile option in Android 4.3. I have young kids (8 and 2.5 y/o in particular) who like to get their hands on our electronics and they can really mess things up by deleting and moving around apps and pictures, etc. My 2.5 y/o is especially notorious of this. Now with the multiple profile option I can set them up with their own profile that they can go nuts with and it doesn’t affect my profile at all. iOS really needs to come up with something like this.
2. The screen is really sharp although I find no difference between the Nexus and full sized iPad. It is much sharper than the current iPad mini.
3. Live wallpapers. I’ve always liked this with Android and having a fishtank as my background is pretty cool.
4. I like the rubberized plastic in the back.
Here’s what I don’t like about it.
1. Battery life is awful! I’m not sure if it’s because it needs to push a lot of pixels for the screen or what, but we’re only getting 5-6 hours of use out of it before it dies. It doesn’t last a whole day at all. It doesn’t even have LTE and the battery drains off quickly. Our iPad mini that does have LTE (granted it spends most of its time on WiFi) usually lasts a good 3-4 days before we need to charge it up.
2. The speakers are not all they’re made out to be. I’m not a sound aficionado by any stretch (my wife tells me I have selective hearing), but our iPad mini gets a lot louder the then Nexus 7. When I watch a movie on it around my kids I need to turn on the closed captioning because I can’t get it loud enough to hear.
3. It randomly freezes on us from time to time.
4. Android is still android. It has gotten better, but the transitions and smoothness of it is still not as good as iOS. I like to use the analogy of Six Flags Amusement Parks (Android) compared to Disney Amusement Parks (iOS). They both get the job done of entertaining us, but Disney and iOS really “plus” things up and are overall cleaner with fewer freezes and hiccups.
All that being said I would probably give it 6 stars out of 10. I will keep it mainly because of the restricted user profile option which I think is great! I’ll let my kids dominate and abuse it which will allow me to fix and clean up the iPad mini.
