Marriott is no longer in the timeshare business. A new name is needed for this part of the BBS. Any suggestions?

Cabinets to timeshares. Who's in charge?

Perhaps the Merillat forum? They aren't in timeshares either except they, by contract, may supply very high quality kitchen cabinets to some resorts. Maybe they are on the "approved" list for no-bid contractors that Marriott insists must be used regardless of price? At least it starts with "M"

Actually Marriott is still in the timeshare business.
They will have a new Marriott company that does what MVC now does.

This is a stock split, not a sale.

It is not a new Marriott Company. It is a new company that is not part of Marriott. It will have a separate and independent board of directors. It will determine its own fate. Further, it is in no way anything like a stock split. Stock issued by the new company most definitely is not Marriott stock and will not be priced based upon Marriott earnings. Marriott will have some equity in the new company but not a controlling interest.

let's see --

same shareowners
many of the same managers
uses the marriott and ritz carleton name
no expected impact on timeshare or points owners

nope -- this is no longer marriott

Clearly it's a new company that's no longer part of Marriott. That's what a spinoff is.

Marriott shareholders will receive shares in the new timeshare company which they will be free to sell, and the price those shares sell at will be entirely attributable to the profits and prospects of the timeshare operations. Meanwhile the old Marriott shares will trade independently and their prices will be independent of the timeshare operations (except initially the Marriott share price should drop because it will have handed over all of its timeshare-related assets net of liabilities to the new company).

What the hairy heck did I miss? Marriott sold off MVCI?

Actually, there will still be Marriott-branded timeshare resorts. Marriott International won't own and develop the resorts, but they'll license the Marriott name to the spin-off company that does.

So it makes sense to continue to call this forum the Marriott Resort System forum.

It really doesn't matter what the business name of the spinoff will be. It could include Marriott as part of the name, or, more likely, it will be one of those nonsense words that start-up and spin-off companies are so fond of (because such names can be trademarked and are available as domain names for Internet use.)

Did you know that Marriott International tries not to own any hotels? The various Marriott brand signs are on a huge number of hotels, but Marriott chooses not to tie up their capital in real estate. Marriott spun off Host Marriott (now Host Hotels & Resorts, L.P.) many years ago to own hotels and to run airport concessions. Then Host Marriott only wanted to own hotels, not to run airport concessions, so Host Marriott spun off a separate company, Host Marriott Services (now HMSHost Corporation). Only a small fraction of Marriott-branded hotels are owned by Host Hotels & Resorts. Over the years, Host Hotels & Resorts has looked for opportunities beyond the Marriott brand, so now owns hotels with all sorts of other upscale brands.

So, those of us who own weeks or points at Marriott Vacation Club properties will continue to do so. And we'll continue to participate in the Marriott Resort System forum.

The Timeshare Giant Formally Known as Marriott :D

I don't see any reason why the new company won't continue to be called Marriott Vacation Club International. They will just license the use of Marriott for the name. They may also just end up calling the new company something like MVCI. So no need to rename the forum here on TUG. All of our resorts will still have Marriott in their names.
