Just a heads up for those of you who visit the Sedona AZ region. In addition to TS trades into Sedona TS resorts & the Marriott Courtyard in west Sedona, another hotel will be opening that gives an additional option for those who travel & want to earn nights/points within the Marriott system. This info based on latest chat I have with someone here who knows more details than I. So at this point, a Westin property is on the horizon.

The new hotel is a Westin brand which is now subsumed into the Marriott/Starwood merger universe. As usual, the project is behind schedule & I've not seen a firm opening date yet. But the hotel will open some time this year. Keep this in mind for any future Sedona travels.

My wife and I live in Village of Oak Creek (VOC) which is where the new hotel is located & presently under construction. VOC is itself 6 miles south of downtown tourist Sedona & located within the red rocks. A good location as VOC has restaurants/shops & is a walkable village that puts you on the doorstep of Sedona, Flagstaff & some 130+ miles south of the Grand Canyon.

--- --- --- --- --- ---- --- ---

If TUGgers have questions about Sedona trails/sights/food we can try to posit some info, although I advise that my view of life here is that of a lone wolf Finn here for the red rock landscape so my dining/ horizons are narrower; but I can still suggest some ideas. I spend much of my time on trails; a good way to shed weight & still be able to drink a beer or two.

Photo below taken 1 mile from our house on the outskirt of VOC. It's a 120ft scramble up a 45+ degree slope to this vantage point. But anyone who can walk a mile can see this scene from a lower vantage point that's still awe-inspiring.

Once again, for those who play the TS/Marriott hotel strategy, keep these 2 Marriott brand hotels in mind if pondering a Sedona visit.

travel safe

We have stayed at the Ridge on Sedona in the Village of Oak Creek several times. We love the area. What are the cross streets for the proposed Westin? Thanks.

It's just past where the 179 going north from I-17 enters VOC proper at Jacks Canyon circle. A new developer takes that over mall/outlet area and that's where the Westin project is at. Westin looks 75% complete to my eye with outside fascia next to do as they begin interior build/finish. Another group is trying to bring a Hilton branded property across the street on a lot designated residential that also is too small for zoning set-back & height limits.

Lots of contentious politics in VOC at this moment. VOC an unincorporated village which opens the door for lots of sleazy deals behind closed doors as $$ talk. This is our 3rd yr living here so we slowly grasp the importance of tourism to local economy, but folks who move here to VOC don't share business lust to exponentially expand VOC commercial ventures. Right now VOC feels like Mayberry with red rocks. We walk to restaurants & grocery store. I call our lifestyle here quasi rural/suburban.

Sedona's successful but quality of living in Sedona drops with over-expansion. We don't want to replicate their devolving lifestyle. Aside from difficulty finding parking spaces at our VOC trailheads, things here are sedate & we don't feel the tourist crush like Sedona has. Growing issue of weekend traffic jams N on 179 to Sedona are becoming a weekday issue. AZ DOT trying to find alternate route north. But hey, paradise is never perfect & neither is timeshare. Who knows . . . it may not even be a Westin by the time it opens as business can be that crazy. Main idea is to adapt and choose carefully. ;)

Is Thanksgiving week a good time to visit Sedona? Any hiking trails and attractions suggestion, besides usual tourist attractions? Thanks.
