HGV is changing the costs for Sunday and Thursday effective 1/1/25

Just received the mail below.

When Hilton Grand Vacations acquired Diamond Resorts in 2021, we promised to keep you informed of integration efforts between the two companies. In keeping with our promise, we are pleased to announce another enhancement to improve your Member experience.

Starting today, the nightly points cost values for HGVClub and The Club reservations have been updated. This change will be in effect for reservations starting in January 2025 and beyond and will be visible on your Club Member website starting January 1, 2024.

What Is Changing?

Hilton Grand Vacations has aligned the nightly points rate across HGVClub and The Club programs. Under the previous nightly points cost methodology, the percentage of nightly points rates based on a 7‑Night stay was 10% for Monday through Thursday nights and 20% for Friday through Sunday nights.

Under the new methodology, the percentage of the nightly points rates based on a 7‑Night stay changes to 10% for Sunday through Wednesday and 20% for Thursday through Saturday nights. The cost of the week remains the same.

What Does This Mean For You?

Our new unified points methodology more closely aligns with the use and demand of our Members and the percentage of nightly points needed for a reservation within HGVClub and The Club programs is now the same for all Members.

Where Can I Learn More?

Visit my.hgv.com/unifiedpointsto review our Frequently Asked Questions and points charts that illustrate the change.
We appreciate your patience and understanding while we continue working towards aligning our Club programs.

Happy journeys ahead,

Derek De Salvia
Executive Vice President & Chief Customer Officer

In the past, cheaper point stays were M to Thursday now it will be Sunday to Wed.

The change will be a net positive for 3-day weekends, most of which include Monday holidays. Cost wound up being 20% each night for Friday check in and Monday check out, adding up to 60%, but will now be just 50% total with Sunday night going down to 10%. IMHO this will affect bHC usage in NYC to some extent and possibly DC to a lesser extent—at least for my usage patterns.

Interesting that they based it on historical usage patterns, where there may be some likelihood that cost influenced demand.

Not sure if this truly is “another enhancement to improve your Member experience”…I was avoiding Friday and Saturday due to the higher points used… now I’ll do some scenarios and see the consequences of this change.

So demand will go back to Sunday nights instead of Thursday nights.... causing a change back in 10 years time due to historical booking patterns! What goes around comes around. I personally don't see how Thursdays would be more popular than Sundays if point costs were exactly the same, so I do think 10% Thurs versus 20% Sun was demand driven thru the point charts mainly.

Great3

The one downside I see is that this drives up the cost of a Wednesday to Friday stay from 20% to 30% of a week cost. That will affect the cost of going to NYC for the Macy’s parade unless I either check in the Sunday prior or stay through Monday. Hmmm

… maybe we could negotiate 15% for both Thursday & Sunday…?

So what happens owners who own partial weeks? At GI, weeks were sold on a M-Th and F-Su split. Does this now mean the week's points are now allocated on a 50-50 basis? If I owned F-Su, wouldn't be too happy with same maint fees and less points. Or is HGVC going to buy back all these deeds?

I just completed a stay at La Pacifica and checked in Monday and checked out Friday for a low cost in points. I guess I'll be doing Sunday to Thursday from this point forward.

Interesting that Vistana puts its points into 3 buckets. MO, Tue, Wed nights super cheap. Thursday and Sunday higher followed by the highest being Friday and Saturday night.

Often times I'll eliminate a high point night with a hotel stay. This past trip I stayed my four nights at La Pacifica and Friday night used some Hyatt points to stay at The Cape on a Friday night. Flew home Saturday.

This is a good question. Currently a M - Th ownership is less points than what it will be in January. I wonder if they realized that when they created this? Most deeds/contracts are a week so no impact.

What is annoying is that other programs, wyndham for example, where ever only Fri and Sat night. I was never sure why HGVC added another night. WM has a completely different rate for Sun that is between weekend rate and midweek rate. I never like that plan either.

For us the change will mean that instead of going Monday - Friday (NYC) we will go Sunday - Thursday.

Since we are international we won’t arrive home until the day after. However arriving home already on Friday means that I can go back to work that day and save 1 vacation day. That’s a win :)

Well maybe after a few years with this HGV realizes that they need to change the point system once again. Then they could do Friday-Saturday as the expensive days and the others as the cheaper options.

Bottom line for me is that it will change the day when I shift between HGVC and Vistana or Wyndham in places with collocated resorts. Just a new arbitrage opportunity….

As others have said, we'll just shift Monday-Fri trips to Sun-Thu. Of course, if we need to be there for the weekend, coming in Friday into the following week now beats coming in early in the week and leaving Sunday. But we can adapt :)

Cheers.

I think more people prefer to take Friday off work for a long weekend (outside holiday weekends) than they would take a Monday off.

We were pretty much exclusively Monday-off people when we worked, but maybe others do Friday. Haven't seen data one way or another.

Cheers.

Nah, I prefer an opportunity to save on points with a straight 4 nights stay tacked onto a normal 7 nights stay that now begins on a Sun instead of a Mon. As Cyberc pointed now, now one less vacation day needed to take off work, I can return to work on a Friday after checking out/flying home on Thursday. Not to mention Thursday fares are generally cheaper than Fridays fares.

Splitting 15% each for Thurs/Sun would probably be better for HGVC, but I like having the 10%/20% split, doesn't matter which day they make it to me!

Great3

I wonder why they didn't go that route? Vistana does 10/15/20. Either way. It's a simple adjustment to travel plans and I can stay in a hotel Saturday night or Thursday night depending upon my direction of travel and flight times.

I don't have any specific statistics to back it up, but when I worked in an office that offered four ten hour work days, more people wanted their "off day" as Friday instead of Monday. I would generally prefer Monday myself as Friday in an office tends to be a better day as people are geared up for the weekend. Sundays are usually a better night as a stay over on vacation because places (restaurants) aren't as busy on a Sunday night as they would be on a Friday.

Oh, in the case of places that do 4-10s or 9-80s, Friday is definitely more popular. Mrs. brp worked at such a place, and had 9-80 for a number of years, and it was Friday. But I still have a feeling that, for pure PTO days (as opposed to scheduled days off like this), Monday may be more popular. This is just based on anecdotal evidence from what we and other people I know of did, though.

Cheers.

I would think call in sick days are more popular on Monday but planned absence may be more likely on a Friday.
