need help with microsoft update

recently, microsoft did an update to my laptop which TOTALLY screwed it up.
i want to do a system restore but must turn off the automatic updates first.can someone tell me how to turn off the microsoft automatic updates?
i have an hp laptop which has windows xp.
thanks a bunch

Go to control panel - automatic updates - and change it from automatic to one of the other choices.

Your version of XP must be different from mine, or perhaps it a laptop/desktop thing. I just finished a restore because of a bad Adobe update installation (third try for this one). I don't have to stop auto updates to run restore. The problem was that Netscape would close due to an error the first time I tried to start it after booting up the computer.
