I have a 2000 Toyota Camry with about 150,000 miles.

Recently, on infrequent occasions when turning the steering wheel to the Right when just starting out with a cold engine, the Camry will turn right but in a wide arc and there seems to be a disconnect between the steering wheel and the turn. It corrects itself, and then doesn't happen again for awhile.

Is this possibly related to the CV joints?

What should I have the auto-mechanic check.

Thanks

Richard

It sounds like power steering issues.

I would go with power steering as suggested. The key element is the problem occurs when the engine is cold. First off, check the fluid, then check the belt. A cold belt can slip, as well as a worn one. A bad CV joint will make a clicking sound but will be a problem all the time, not just when the engine is cold. I remember the story of the lady who started her car one morning and heard loud thumping and other noises from under her hood. She stopped in time to see a cat that had been sleeping escape from under the car.

If your mechanic is any good, he'll try to replicate the problem by asking you to leave your car overnight and drive it when the engine is cold. If he starts poking around after you just drive up, he may not find it.

My mechanic once complained to me about a new truck, saying that it had a transmission problem and he new how to fix it, but since it was under warranty, he had to take it back to the dealer 3x, and their mechanics were clueless.

1st off...check your insurance if you are still driving it.

Intermitent Steering Issue sound like accident waiting to happen to me. If I do not trust the car, I won't drive it. No exceptions...towing isn't that expensive.

That said, you are dealer bound. there "might" be a code for that lodged in the onboard computer...they can check for that.

do a google search for the problem to see if its been noted by others.. most of the time you can find a cure as well..
