More Than a Million People Ditched Cable TV Last Quarter - by Bryan Clark/ Insider/ TNW/ thenextweb.com

"As US cable companies continue their respective plots to stop the flight of paying customers, companies like Netflix, Hulu, Sony and others are reaping the biggest rewards.

Last quarter alone, an estimated 812,000 subscribers cut the cord on pay-television service, according to a recent study by consulting firm SNL Kagan. The number of cord cutters is representative of families that have elected to cancel bundled video service from cable, satellite or telephone companies.

But this isn’t new for cable companies.

“It is a bit of an acceleration and the biggest quarterly loss that we’ve seen,” says Ian Olgeirson, an analyst with SNL Kagan. “We are seeing a gradual increase in the decline rate.”

The year-over-year numbers are even more telling. Compared with the same period last year, cable companies have nearly 1.4 million fewer customers.

We use ROKU to supplement a basic Directv package. I would get rid of Directv but hubby has to have FOX news and football games.

I agree with your husband. He must be a very intelligent person.

Fiction and gladiator sports often go together...on a related topic, I encourage everyone to watch the movie Concussion - you won't look at Football the same again.

I watched Concussion, I really didn't see or hear anything new. I'm watching the Packers now.:D

Download Kodi on your Roku and you'll get sports and Fox News.

I am watching the Rams and Minnesota right now. I am glad to see the Rams back where they belong in Los Angeles.

I agree the Rams belong in Los Angeles.

I beat them all by six quarters.

Kodi? Really? The seasons' NFL football games? Is there a charge for that? I had never heard of it...

I live in the past. Still use a clam shell phone and DirectTV and pick up DVDs at either the Library or Red Box. My total cost is $131.48 a month and I haven't paid a single dollar for hardware (other than my TV) in over 15 years.

My husband looked into this. He said it cannot be downloaded on Roku -only on an Android Phone.

Key it into YouTube. I installed it on my FireTV. I'm sure you can put it on Roku too. If not buy a $40 Firestick and install it on there. I put it on ours that we take with us on vacations.

We cut the cord 17 months ago. I am so much happier with Roku, Sling, Tablo, and Amazon Prime. Oh, and Redbox.

During football season we paid and extra $5 a month for the ESPN package and we didn't miss a game of our favorite college team.

The 1-time cost of a Roku box and 8x10 paper thin antenna was way cheaper than 1 month of cable. Now we pay next to nothing for cable channels that we actually watch and enjoy.

I was the same as you up until 9 months ago. I got a new job at work and it requires a smartphone that they pay for so I got rid of my flip phone. Then I bought a FireTV for $84 and installed Kodi. I dropped DishNetwork and my landline and haven't looked back.

I have no TV bill and no landline bill either. It saves me about $140 a month and I have more TV than I've ever had before. And there's no need to stop by the Library or Redbox. All the movies are on either Amazon or Kodi.

I had Sling too and even quit that after installing Kodi but Sling is more like traditional cable.
