ROYAL HOLIDAY CLUB RHC (POINTS)
In January 1888, 33 explorers and scientists who hoped to encourage popular interest in geography, formed the National Geographic Society. The first president of the organization was Gardiner Greene Hubbard, father-in-law of Alexander Graham Bell, who succeeded him after Hubbard's death in 1897. One hundred and twenty years ago this month, the first issue of National Geographic Magazine was published. Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor, Bell's son-in-law, was named the first full-time editor of the magazine and became a driving force in the successful marketing of the organization and the journal. Grosvenor was born in Constantinople, Turkey, on this date in 1875.
"I never leaf through a copy of National Geographic without realizing how lucky we are to live in a society where it is traditional to wear clothes." — Erma Bombeck
