A lot of the lake cottages on either side of the lake - NY or VT- are like this. Rustic, older, require cleaning sometimes, etc. Much different vibe from a resort. That said, location on the lake is great.

One cottage we rented from Home Away in Vermont on the lake years ago we cleaned the entire cottage upon check out- vacuuming, bathrooms, etc.
It was either that or pay the cleaning fee. So we chose to clean. It’s a small place anyway and I’m a clean freak. lol!

Well, the only cleaning fee option was someone who wouldn't do the laundry, the hardest part of the cleaning! So no, we didn't pay the fee. VRBO is nice in that now they can't add extra fees - I guess they could give my account a bad review, but I don't really care.
