I went to the hardware store this morning to get some items I needed to paint my Jeep. I found the items and saw a few hot water tanks that were returned with no box selling for less than half price. These tanks came with a 5 year warranty. One of the tanks had a superficial dent so I asked them if they could discount it. Two managers couldn't figure out what to do and the main manager told them to sell it to me for $100 and include the extended warranty. The warranty cost $70 so they deducted the $70 and I ended up with a new tank for $30. It retails for about $600.

It don't need the tank yet so it's stashed away in my ocean container.

I'd say that's an excellent deal...
but (1) why would someone return one,
and (b) what is an "ocean container?"

That's the kind of deal I love!

A contractor ended up with way too many tanks for some reason and their workers had opened all of the boxes up to install fittings. IDK if it was the hardware stores fault or the contractors fault but I'm thinking it's the hardware stores mess either way.

Let me guess what the "ocean container" is: that is what you put all your stuff in when you move back & forth between the mainland and Hawaii?

Yup. Our 40's came from Tacoma WA after spending time going back and forth to China. I was trying to empty them out but as things go out, things go in. I used these for construction material storage and now for remodeling material storage and stuff.

Hopefully they are stainless (usually much more than $600) and not lined tanks.

I'm pretty sure it's a lined tank. The 80 gallon tank I installed here when I built this house is a lined tank and hasn't had an issue for 37 years.
