Hey all,

I need help planning out our trip to Marriott Village d'lle de France. I already read 20 plus threads about it from the past several years and have been watching a number of youtube videos. We have a week booked from Sunday Dec 21nd to Sunday Dec 28th. I'm planning to add three nights after that week somewhere, but I need help deciding where to go next. Family of four with what will be our 19 year old son and 15 year old daughter. I have been to France once when I was 18, no one else has gone. It was a school trip so of course we hit all the big highlights, Paris, Normandy, MSM, Loire, Versailles.

My wife wants to visit Strasbourg for the Christmas Markets. For 2024 the markets ended Dec 27th per the Googles. And, also see some of the Christmas Markets in Paris. I know we can take the train into Strasbourg and it's a roughly two hour one way trip which seems like you would miss out with that much travel in one day. I'm debating adding a night or two for Strasbourg after MVF, but that may well be after the markets wrap up for the year. I could have my daughter miss a couple days of school and arrive on Friday for two nights in Strasbourg first, then go to MVF. Has anyone been to France at Christmas time, and/or Strausbourg?

Alternatively, we could do a few nights down around Dijon and the Burgundy region, or, Normandy / Mont St. Michelle, or, go down to the Nice area (longer than 2 hrs), or, Orleans and tour the Loire Valley area, or, Germany, or, we could save Paris and add a couple nights in Paris at the end of our trip. Suggestions or thoughts?

I'm just starting to build our plans for when we are at MVF, but on the list of considerations are:

- Paris for two days via train
- Versailles via train or car
- Reims / Champaign area via train or car
- Provins / Fontainebleu, maybe in the same day, via car
- Disneyland for one day. I expect many things to be closed on Christmas day, but DLP should be open so we might go then.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Keep your plans flexible the weather could be very poor.

I'm doing mid April with starting with 3 nights in a Chateau in Normandy, we may not make it to Mont St M, but we'll do 2 full days touring the Normandy coast, and then head down to MVC to chill and then explore as suits us at the time.

I'd expect Reims to have a Christmas Market that will be very nice, this year it ended on 29 Dec. Consider taking the train there instead of driving so you have both options. If Strasbourg is particularly significant spend a couple of nights there, if not there are plenty of great Christmas markets closer at hand, including Paris.

We went to Europe to visit Christmas Markets in December of last year using Brussels, Strasbourg, and Munich as our 'bases of operation'.

We were in Strasbourg for three nights and the self styled "Christmas Capital of the World" was indeed spectacular. We took the TGV in from Brussels (via Paris) and stayed in the center of town next to the Markets at the Maison Rouge Strasbourg Hotel. It was amazing (our favorite hotel of the three) and I can not recommend it highly enough. One day we took the train from Strasbourg down to Colmar which I also heartily recommend. We had originally planned to go down to Basel Switzerland as well...but ended up spending that day in Strasbourg instead.

The only downside of staying in central Strasbourg is that it is closed to vehicular traffic during market season so we had to walk with our luggage from the train station to/from the hotel (about 10-15 minutes). You could also take the tram which continues to operate.

- Disneyland for one day. I expect many things to be closed on Christmas day, but DLP should be open so we might go then.
That's a brilliant idea. Europe is usually 'hard closed' on Christmas day.

Thank you. Did you find three nights to be too long there?

We are usually good at being flexible and I plan to get a car for the week we are at MVF, even if it doesn't get used every day. There are some items that we will need to book in advance. We usually like to book as little as possible and just roam the streets, shop, eat where ever we happen upon, with a few of the main sights tossed in.

It seems that the main issue is cold weather, which coming from northern Ohio and previously Michigan, we can handle. Hopefully we don't get much in the way of cold rains. Good tip on the train to Reims. I still need to figure out the train layout, but I have a lot of time for that.

Nice trip enjoy your planning. It probably wont be freezing day and night like you are used to, more likely to be grey miserable rain, above or around freezing. When they do get snow it tends to cause transport problems as they aren't set up very well for that, so things tend to grind to a halt, hence the need to be flexible.

Not at all. We arrived in the evening on the TGV, had a lovely dinner and then walked to the Christmas Market across the street, shopped a bit, and saw the light show. The next day we travelled by train to see Colmar (which is a much smaller and very charming town) with its own set of sights and markets. Our last full day in Strasbourg we did laundry, saw yet more sights, and visited four or five of the more than dozen markets in Strasbourg. And then the next day we departed for Munich.

Enjoy your time in Normandy. We spent 4 days in Normandy this past October and it was not enough. There are a couple nice hotels right on Omaha beach which we plan to stay at on our next visit.

If you are a history buff, the American cemetery is a must stop and almost a whole day there. Make sure to take the guided docent led tour which is done twice a day. If you get the director, the stories she has and the personal connection to D Day is not to be missed. A visit to Point Du Hoc and St. Marie Eglise is not to be missed. Also there are numerous memorials around Normandy marking the sites of battles during the D Day invasion and where Medals of Honor were awarded for acts of bravery.

Mont St Michelle would be at least a 6 hour excursion. Make sure to walk around the village and maybe have a bite to eat or drink from the restaurants. Wife and I had a great time walking around the ramparts and exploring the Unesco site.

Thanks, we've already done a day tour off a cruise so seen some and this trip is to do a bit more. We are only half a days drive away so will be going again to do M St M, as the TUG feedback seems to be that staying overnight there is a special thing to do. What were the names of the hotels so I can take a look for future trips?

Great info on the places to visit, many thanks, I'll add it to the list. 🙏

On east end of Omaha it is called La Sapiniere. On the west end where a part of a mulberry harbor is grounded, it is a hotel attached or near this restaurant Le Mathelia.

Right by La Sapinere there is a Naval Combat Demolition memorial. Above monument is a pill box with an old Germany 88mm gun pointed down the beach.

Across the street on the beach from Restaurant Le Mathelia, there is a nice monument that is built over a large pillbox guarding road off Omaha beach. On beach next to pillbox, you can walk over a portion of mulberry caison with a boardwalk over it extending 100 feet into ocean. In the hill above restaurant, there is an easy walking trail that leads partially into a German pillbox. Attached is a pic from pillbox. Not my picture.

Enjoy your time there. I explored that section for 4 hours and it was not enough time.

Speaking of Mount St. Michel - If you have the time, an overnight stay on the site is amazing. We did that 20 years ago, and it's magic when they shut down and the crowds are gone. Hotel accommodations at that time were very limited and quite "rustic", even "primitive", but it's a memory that lives forever!

We've done the following with teens and recommend:
  • Fontainebleau and Vaux le Vicomte-can be done in the same day via car-easy driving.
  • DLP-small like DL. Fun to see the French version.
  • Provins as a 1/2 day on via car, or take the bus from DLP (if it runs in winter) as a full day-this bus trip is a lovely ride thru countryside.
  • WWI museum in Meaux via car-excellent.
  • Paris via train. I'd book one or two things (three is doable in a somewhat rushed day), eat a French lunch, and amble around the Latin Quarter. Galleries Lafayette is a fun pop in to see what department store shopping used to be (fantastic architecture with dome).
  • Strasbourg-easy train day trips Colmar (lovely town), Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg (shuttle bus departing from SNCF rail station of Sélestat. Weekends from 2 March to 29 December 2024. (Castle closed 1 January, 16 October, 25 26 December). Shuttle timetable based upon arrival times of TER (local) trains from Strasbourg and Colmar).

Is it crazy to try and do a side trip to Normandy / Mont St. Michelle, as a two day one night trip? Either driving ourselves with a car or via a tour?

Our current plan is:

Arrive Friday, Dec 19th morning, take train to Strasbourg. Two nights in Strasbourg

Move Sunday Dec 21st to MVF for seven nights.

One or two days in Paris via train, DLP on Christmas, a few local side trips with a rental car or train to remain open and flexible.

Adding three extra nights after MVF.

Possible idea is leave Sunday Dec 28th to Normandy, see D-Day beach and American Cemetary. Stay the night in the general area.

Monday, Dec 29th, go early to Mont St. Michelle. Leave by 4-5pm to head to Paris.

Stay two nights at a hotel in Paris before flying home.

It's a lot, but it's is too much / crazy?

Husband and teens Took BayeuxShuttle tour on prior trip. They said excellent and the logistics worked great. They trained from Paris the day before to Bayeux, spent the night, did the tour the next day, and then took Bayeux to Paris train that coincides with the end of the tour. You'd want to find a place to store luggage so you don't have to take to Bayeux--maybe ask the Paris hotel that you'll stay at after the tour if you could check luggage a day prior to check in?

We did something similar this past thanksgiving and it was a 10 days trip. 2 nights in Paris and the rest we stayed at MVF with a night in Strasbourg. We personally liked the Christmas markets in Colmar and it’s a quick train ride from Strasbourg.

Was initially skeptical about the train rides from MVF to Paris but we were totally ok with it and is a much much better option than driving in. We rented a car for a day trip to Champagne and it was nightmare driving back into the City from MVF to return the car. There was a slight drizzle that day and it took us 3 hours. We initially were considering driving to Versailles Palace and after that episode decided not to. The train option just worked out fine.

I suppose you will be getting the Navigo weekly pass which saves quite a bit on local travel. We took the passport sized pictures from here and it made the process quite seamless.

The Navigo and train to Paris is awesome. So easy to walk to main road from MVF then hop on bus to DIsneyland Paris and train station. Then if going to Paris hop on RER. With Navigo you can use all the public transportation in Paris (Trains, Metro, Bus). Also if visiting Basilica at Montmatre, the Navigo includes the vehicular ride up/down with nor extra charge. We used Navigo for the week and it was the best $30 I spent in France. Bus ran usually on time and with lots of them running from MVP to DLP train station. Then from train station it is about 45 minutes to Paris. See all the landmarks using the bus or metro to get from one landmark to another made it worth it.

Another thing I wanted to mention, from MVF to the DLP train station, there are 2 bus options. Bus 2234 stops right in front of the resort but goes through the village and is about 20+mins ride. There is an express bus options (route 55, if i remember correctly) and has just 1 stop before getting to the train station and takes less than half the time of 2234. The 55 bus stop is another 2 min walk towards the city center.

For trains to Strasbourg, if you book in advance OUIGO is substantially cheaper than TVG. We probably paid more going from Strasbourg to Colmar than from Paris to Strasbourg.

Thanks Group. I need to invest some time to understand the metro and trains. The Navigo is a one week at a time pass (or daily, or by the ride), so I might need two weeks of passes, right? And, the Navigo covers all the Paris metros, RER, and bus system, but I'd need a different ticket to take the fast train to Strasbourg right? We are debating in the family right now; the wife and son want to go do a two day one night trip to Normandy whereas the daughter and I would rather add a couple nights at a hotel in Paris.

You no longer have to get a physical pass with passport pictures for the navigo. As long as you have a smartphone you can buy and use the pass that way without the hassle of pictures and a physical card.

We did Paris in April. We got a Membership to Versailles and it was great to both skip the lines and also so we could wonder in and out and not have to worry if we would need another ticket once we went to visit some of the other properties.
It was just my wife and I so the small price difference was worth it.
Our favorite trip was to Reims. The church which is where the coronation actually happened is fun to see and it was a nice town. Wife is a chocolatier, so we visited chocolate shops vs the Campaign tastings and also the famous Biscuit Rose.
We did have a rental car as my corporate rate was about 30 euro a day. We Ubered into Paris and took the train back.

NAVIGO is available for Daily, Weekly or Monthly options.

Daily is 12 euro
Weekly (Mon-Sun only) 31.60 euro
Monthly 88.80 euro

Don't get confused and buy the Paris Visite pass which costs quite a bit more (for unsuspecting tourists!)
1-Day 29.90 euro
2-Day 44.45
3-Day 62.30
5-Day 76.25

True. Dealing with 4 different phones and worrying about battery levels on the way back to the resort kept me away from that option!

Does each person need to have a navigo on their own phone? Or, can I have all four passes on my phone and check everyone in?

Each person had to have it when we used Navigo a few months ago. If there was a way to use one phone I did not know how. You need to scan on entrance and then walk through, I would think it would be cumbersome to pass your phone back. Plus you have to scan on exit.
