MVC Article

From NerdWallet.com:

Just noted the "Advertiser Disclosure" at the top of the article, where clicking the link reveals this:

"So how do we make money? Our partners compensate us. This may influence which products we review and write about (and where those products appear on the site), but it in no way affects our recommendations or advice, which are grounded in thousands of hours of research. Our partners cannot pay us to guarantee favorable reviews of their products or services."

This is quite common from these blog sites. They make money from referring people to credit cards and such. The disclosure is a legal requirement. Not sure if this article is an actual paid plug.

Yes, it's hard to say if it's a paid plug. But they're certainly not sending you to a broker to buy resale points, which would be an identical product for half the price. :)

True, and they don't even mention resale in the article.

Also mention Marriott Vacation club and Sheraton and Westin club, so looks an old recycled info article.

Marriott Vacations still uses all three of those vacation club brands.

I read the article and I think its a pretty accurate factual description of MVC. It doesn't really cover costs (other than initial outlay amount for a basic membership) nor comparing maintenance fees to similar accommodation costs at comparable areas/ seasons/ resorts.
I didn't view it as an outright recommendation of MVC at all.

Yeah, I don't see it as a sales pitch.

The article is guilty by omission: its failure to focus on the actual cost and its failure to even mention the resale market.

The article is a factual read yet it is not totally accurate. He made quite a few misleading statements that are not a big deal to the average person but will jump out at many experienced Marriott Tuggers. A few examples:

In the first paragraph, he implied that the Marriott hotel side i.e. Marriott Bonvoy, offers Marriott Vacation Club. We know they are separate companies.

He mentioned other brands ”in addition to Marriott Vacation Club.” But Westin, Sheraton, Grand Residences and Ritz are part of MVC (now called Abound) but Hyatt is not. It might just be the wording of how he described this but I think he could have better clarified how these other clubs work in relation to joining the Marriott Vacation Club/Abound.

He could have done a more extensive pros and cons. His conclusions are really bland and unhelpful.

He did not mention Abound at all, which should have been covered.

I have other criticisms of how he reported but the above are a few examples. I got the impression that he knows just enough to be dangerous as the old saying goes.

Incredible financial analysis of whether it is worth it.

Headline: Is Marriott Vacation Club Worth It?

Conclusion: If you like to experience different places around the world and don’t mind staying connected to one network of properties, then the Marriott Vacation Club is probably worth it. But if you prefer to decide on new places or different types of vacation experiences at the last minute, then maybe it’s not the best program for you.
