.... wild mountain lion in Indiana? .....mountain lions in Illinois and now the first wild mountain lion has been caught by a game camera in Indiana.
We live in interesting times.

They were here first. Their ancestors said to each other, "Hey, what are these new two-legged items on the menu?"
Out here in the West, we don't get too surprised by cougars in neighborhoods against the mountains in Salt Lake. We have lots of deer in our city and have had moose(s).
So much for that ol' 'Dominion over the Earth' thing.
Ugh. I experienced my second live encounter while horseback riding last Friday. I often see tracks and other secondary evidence ... but the live encounters really raise one's heart rate. Gladly the horse remained relatively calm and did not attempt to bolt.
Last spring one neighbor lost a foal (young horse) to a mountain lion. The attack was made in daylight very close to the house. This year we've heard far too many reports of missing goats, dogs and the occasional cow.
Very interesting shots of what looks to be a well-fed mountain lion!
Except that they are non-discriminatory about the meat they eat, I would welcome one in my backyard to cull the deer & goose population. I walked in the door this evening and had to shoo away a deer munching on my petunias.
Quickly put deer repellent on each basket and hope that is enuf to keep he & his buddies away.
For the three Mountain Lions in Illinois I read that one was killed by a train near a railway bridge. One was found dead and shot with an arrow. The most surprising one was inside the city of Chicago. All were males.
Black bears have been spoted north or Peoria and one hybernating bear was removed from the area a couple years back. A police officer identified a mother and cub in the area recently. I believe that would suggest there is at least one more male black bear in the area. ;-)
I have seen the tracks near my home and one has been photographed within a half mile of my home. We are very rural and these type of sightings have always been heard about, but our DNR always denies the claims by anyone. We are about a half an hour west of Purdue University in west central IN. No trouble has ever been seen from it and the deer do alot more property damage. If he doesn't bother me I'll give him the same courtesy.
