Looking for comments on either trading into or picking up a bonus week into either of the two resorts.
My issue with the options RCI presents is that there appears to be a mandatory AI fee coupled with the bonus week cost or the trade cost that makes the trip rather costly. Then airfare needs to be purchased. This seems to bring the cost close to what you might buy from Funjet or some other vacation wholesaler.
Am I missing something? Is there a better way to play this. Need help and advice from TUG members Palace owners visitors.

Moon Palace and Mayan Palace Not Affiliated

The Mayan Palace and Moon Palace are not affiliated in any way. When you hear the "Palace" resorts in the Riviera Maya, Moon Palace is one of several. However Mayan Palace and the Grand Mayan Palace are not part of the "Palace Resorts". My understanding is that all of the Palace resorts are AI. Like you, I think the extra AI fee (per person) to stay at these resorts is extremely high and way more money than I spend eating on my own in Mexico. I've been to a couple AI's before I started timesharing and thought the food was fairly low quality also.

Mayan Palace is not AI, so you pay for what you eat and drink there.

I've been to both.

The food is good at the Moon Palace, but the AI fee is really high. We cannot eat and drink that much! You can purchase a package through a travel agency for the same price (sometimes less).

The Mayan Palace is further south on the Mayan Riviera, towards Playa del Carmen. We really like going there. The resort is huge and nice. Restaraunts are pretty good. We especially like taking the bus into Playa and eating in town. You can take the ferry to Cozumel from there for a fun day.

I would choose the Mayan Palace because we like to go to different places to eat and see the local culture. When you are at the AI resorts, you hate to go someplace else since you have already paid so much for your meals.

When you stay at Moon Palace you get some extras for your AI cost. You get 2 or 3 tours and your transfers to and from the airport. That in itself adds up to $200 or $300. And you can eat in any of the Palace restaurants in any of the Cancun Palaces, and there are several. The food is quite good, not just buffet. You can order a bottle of wine with your dinner and order from a menu, no extra costs. You can eat and drink all day!

Moon palace

also if you own there you can get manicure/pedicures and massages free for every person in your room. If you travel there you can go on a different tour every day if you want and its all included. The food there was much better than allegro resorts which we had stayed at in Cozumel.

Exchanging through RCI, you may get transferred to another resort if you pick the Moon Palace and you could get bumped from the Grand Mayan to the regular Mayan if you go the other way. If you want AI book the Moon Palace through a discount travel agency and save an exchange and some money. If you don't want AI, cross your fingers and try for the Grand Mayan. Personally, I would avoid the both of them.

Where in Playa

I'm modifiying the original thread and question. As another alternate, where in Playa, based on the same issues. I would like to go to Playa either through an exchange or a bonus week. I'm looking for a decent resort with good beach area. My issue is with the tacked on AI fees. These fees bring the cost close to packages that can be booked through Funjet etc. I think I would like to go into Playa several times during the week if not daily to try out local restaurants or beach bars etc. I enjoy that aspect of going to different locations vs. being stuck to the resort. I have heard comments about the Mayan Palace, but is it too far from Playa to get back and forth once a day?
Thanks in advance for comments.
