I have to admit, i am a very picky eater. My biggest weakness is Steak. I love Steak, medium to rare just dripping and I love to chew it, slowly, savoring every bite. No tenderloin, specially those wrapped with bacon, what a way to kill a good piece of meat. New York strip, Sirloin the variety that you have chew.

So far unfortunately, my experiences in Cancun have not satisfied this craving.

Any ideas. We're heading there in a couple of weeks and I am making up my restaurant to visit list. On the top of the list, is Steak restaurants. Char Broiled, big, dripping with juices, nothing fancy, like some french sauce to ruin the taste, straight off the grill to my plate with nothing more than a possible pickle or baked spud.

There are some Argentine Steak Houses in Cancun. Ruth Chris is also there. I have never eaten in any of them but others here might know. They have excellent steak at El Conquistador in the Royal Mayan. I also love a great steak. I hope you find one. Let me know so next time I'm there I will have a new place to go.

Usually we go to Ruth Chris in Cancun and have always loved it. Last year, however, we went to El Conquistador and it was by far the best steak I have ever had. 3 of us had steak and they were all wonderful :)

My 11 year old daughter is in love with steak at the moment...

On our 10 day visit to Cancun she had

Prime Rib - Tradewinds (Royal Caribbean)
Steak - Margaritaville
Steak - Outback
Steak - Argentine place at Marriott Casa Magna

I thought that the restaurant and the Marriott was very lovely. Very expensive. We shared a 14 oz sirloin.

I too am a steak hound but have cut back because their is still too much of me to love:wave:

Ruth Chris is a very high end chain which broils their steaks in butter. Even here in the NY region, it is one of the best (and we do have the best).

Never been to the one in Cancun, but every one I have visited is identical and great.

Have fun!

Cambalache at Plaza Forum or its sister restaurant Puerto Madero (near the Royal Sands, accross from the Ritz Carlton) would be good choices.

"Ruth Chris is a very high end chain which broils their steaks in butter"
"Prime Rib - Tradewinds (Royal Caribbean)"
"Steak - Outback"

Did I mention ...very picky....
Didn't try "Ruth Chris" after I had it once in Toronto...Overpriced and not sure what they were trying to do to the meat but, they forgot it was a Steak, already god's perfect food.

The Prime Rib at the Caribbean was a choice on one of our first nights. Never went back. To cook Prime Rib to me is "specially in Mexico", walk the cow around the block once under the sun, then just set it on my plate, cooked long enough.

Outback... close...tried Prime and Striploin... I just couldn't treat my taste buds this way.

Also tried a couple of places downtown, oh well, what was i thinking.

I heard about Cambalache, have them on the list this year.

My backup plan, ....buy a good steak at Wallmart or some other meat store and cook it myself...Best I ever had was in Boston "believe it or not", can't remember the name, it was years ago. Best striploin ever, 22OZ,:p took me an hour to finish.
Hopefully i get more suggestions... I don't mind cooking my own but no BBQs in the Royals...

El Conquistador

Give the El Conquistador at the Royal Mayan a chance. I had a great steak there. It is USDA and they will cook it however you want them to.

There is a restaurant, the name escapes me. If you walk out of the Royal Sands and cross the Boulevard to the left it is right on the Lagoon. We had a wonderful and very reasonable dinner there last year. The steaks were awesome! Ohh, just read above, Puerta Madero!!!

Ruth Chris has had some good comments in Cancun. I've had some good beef at El Conquistador as well. Just heard some great things about Puerto Madera too.

Rio Churrascaria

We love brazilian steakhouses and tried this one in our last trip to Cancun and thought it was excellent. The service was attentive and I was very impressed by the quality and variety of meat choices and preparation styles. Most meats are only seasoned with coarse salt then knocked off before slicing right in your table. If you end up going there do not pass on the picanha, a horseshoe-shaped cut with a rind of fat (brazilian butchers cut beef differently) with a flavor different than any meat I have ever encountered.

The buffet, desserts and small wine list were also very good. I can't wait to go back.

It is located in the hotel zone going towards downtown. Good luck.:)

Thanx onemorewong

I searched for Brasilian restaurants in Canacun on the web but none came out. This is a great referral as I agree, they do it right in Brasil. I went to one in Aruba a couple of years ago, you know, where they keep coming to your table with skewers of incredible meats until you literally burst. Hope this one is the same....:whoopie:

We went to Cambalache with a group of 9 and everyone absolutely LOVED their steak! A little pricey since you have to add on all your sides but the steaks were great.

Enjoy!

We are in total agreement Rainstud.

Gissell,
Totaly agree with you! My husband and I had the best steaks, we picked out as the waiter brought over the cuts availabile and our dinner was great. Then for dessert we had the coffee that they made at our table "on fire" was just wonderful!!

Hi Rainstud,

The food your are describing is actually argentinian cowboy food from the "Pampas" or great plains of Argentina. It is commonly referred to as "Rodizio" and served in meat restaurants called "Churrascaras". It has pretty much be co-opted by Brazilians these days.

A quick google of "rodizio" and "cancun" returned a number of hits. It is getting more ubiquitous these days.

I love it but it is definitely not for the mandatory low salt types.

There are a good number of them in the NY region these days for those coming to NY or NJ in the future.

John

I will give my two cents and venture slightly off-topic, sorry.

Saying that brazilian churrasco is argentinian cowboy food would be almost as insulting to a brazilian as saying that Argentina soccer is better than Brazil soccer.

The cattle-raising Pampas region is a large area covering North Argentina, Uruguay and South Brazil. The churrasco is deeply rooted in the culture of the gauchos, brazilian cowboys from the state of Rio Grande do Sul. If I remember this right, since the 17th century brazilian gauchos roast pieces of meat in a hole opened in the ground and season it with the ashes from the fire. This form of meat preparation slowly became popular in that state with lots of churrascarias opening in the 1960s along the sides of the roads and very fast the truckers spread the taste for churrascos throughout Brazil.

rainstud, enjoy your trip!

Thanx TUGGERS....You're one heck of a great family.

My restaurant list is complete and I promise to share the experiences with all of you so you can try out the good ones and hopefully avoid the problem ones.

As I look outside this morning, we received 5 cm of snow last night, can you believe it, this late in the year. ....But not going to get me down. Just two more weeks to go....:whoopie:

I had to wipe some now off my windshield this morning too-spring will come soon enough.

My husband is a steak lover also. This pas February: His BEST steak was at the CAPTIANS COVE. Cooked perfect and tender.

another vote for Puerto Madero. Nearly brought BubbaQ to tears it was so good. (and yeah he agrees with your method of cooking).

Texas de Brazil?

You are probably referring to Texas de Brazil. See http://www.texasdebrazil.com. I wasn't crazy about the one in Aruba, probably because we had been eating so much all week. But come to their location in Texas some time and we'll show you how its done.

Thanx Janann;

Actually you're absolutely right on the Aruba one, I wasn't overly thrilled with the food itself but the idea, I loved. Now if you can only do this right, then i might even buy shares in that restaurant.

I have never been to Texas. My brother, a couple of people who worked for me have and they said the same things. Must visit. I am planning a trip sometime in the next few years to that part of the US, it will include, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and a stopever in Seattle before we head back. Apart from Seattle, I guess you can tell the theme of this trip.

10 days to go....
