Just took our newly aquired mini schnauxer, Viki, to the vet today for a puppy checkup. She has kennel cough which we suspected. She does not cough at all during the day, only at night. He also took xrays and the lungs are clear, thank God. We did what we said we would never do and bought her from a reputable puppy store, which most likely got her from a puppy mill. I know we should not have done it, but her temperament is so good that we could not resist. Our last 2 dogs were from area breeders and they both were sickly. One had Adissons disease and the other had seizures. I feel guily having bought her from a store, but we could not resist. Hopefully, things will work out for the best. We avoided getting another dog for 5 long years and made this hasty decision. I hope some of you have had some good experiences with puppy store puppies. Joyce

Friends of ours have a Bichon from a puppy store and he is truly one of the nicest dogs I know (and I include my own in that comparison!). He has had no health problems either and he's 6 years old now. Our newer dog (from a shelter) had terrible kennel cough when we got him last year as a pup, and even though he was on antibiotics when he came home, and we were careful about keeping them apart, our other dog got a terrible case of it too, and he'd been vaccinated against it. It was my first experience with it and I was really concerned about their long-term recovery--the coughing was THAT bad. However, I'm happy to report that both are just fine now. It does take quite a while to clear.
