I'm aware of the location, grounds and amenities. Does anyone know the differences between the Wyndham vs. Shell units?

* Wyndham Mauna Loa Village.
* Shell Holua resort at Mauna Loa village

As far as I know it’s just how inventory is allocated at this point. There may come a point where one side does updates to the rooms before the others but it’s too new for that to be a thing yet.

The 2 resorts are separate. The entrance to the Shell resort is accessible thru the Wyndham entrance. The Shell resort is located farther from the road and closer to the Parking area. I own at Wyndham and have only stayed in those units. From what I can see the patio furniture is nicer at the Shell resort. FWIW, RCI lists Shell as a Gold Crown and Wyndham as a Silver. The units structurally are the same. If you're looking for a quiet place to use as a home base for exploring the island it's a good choice but you'll definitely need a car. Most of the units are 2 BR's with the BR's on the lower floor and the kitchen upstairs. They have A/C. The Sheraton is walking distance.

I think the location of the units. We stayed several years ago, DD & I stayed in a unit using shell points and were given a unit furthest from the road and had the best ocean view. At the time there was construction going on between the resort and the ocean so I do not know if the view still exists, The same week I got my brother an exchange into the Wyndham side. His unit was basically the same as ours...slightly different furnishings but the layout was the same. His was near the office with no views.

The shell/RCI units are nice and further from the road.

Hello, new to the forum! Stumbled on this thread via Google. Not a timeshare owner but was looking at booking at the Mauna Loa Village through the Wyndham Rewards website.

I called the front desk to try to figure out which of the two properties to book and was very confused. They say both properties have the 'same rooms' (so I guess size/layout) so I can book either property, but upon my pressing further, they admitted the Club Wyndham rooms have been more recently updated, which would suggest the Club Wyndham is the better property. But interestingly, the Wyndham website charges about $60/night more for the Shell Vacations rooms which they say are 1 br 1200 sq ft villas as compared to the Club Wyndham 1 br condos which are 900-1000 sq ft, which would suggest the Shell Vacations is the better property?

Can anyone tell me the difference between the two properties and suggest which one to pick? Does one have better views or is closer to the water?

Also considering the Shell Vacations Club Kona Coast Resort (1 br Honu or Naia villas available), so also open to opinions on that one. All 3 properties cost the same amount of Wyndham Rewards points (which are different from timeshare points), so the price is irrelevant.

Thank you

Neither have ocean views to speak of, the resort is a quarter mile in from a black lava shoreline. There aren't many sandy beaches close to the resort, you will need a car. The biggest beach is on the north side of Kona at the old airport. You can also go south to Place of Refuge with snorkeling at 2 Step.

Shell has nicer lanai furniture with fabric cushions, Wyndham has plastic wicker style. The units are an interesting 6 sided main room with a galley kitchen.

None of the ones mentioned are ocean front, so no real preference. We have stayed at Shell twice.

Thanks for the reply!

Do you know if there's any difference in the rooms in terms of the Wyndham ones being more recently updated and smaller?

Sorry, it's been about 10 years since we stayed there and never on the Wyndham side, I only observed the Lanai furniture from outside. We always stay in Waikoloa, we added on an extra week here, got a good deal renting from a TUG member with extra Shell points.

Gotcha, thanks. Hoping someone has some recent experiences too.

There are two recent reviews of the Shell side, neither indicate any recent updates. You need to join TUG for $15 to see reviews.

This one by a YouTuber is older. Cliff is a member here.
