I apparently have way too much time on my hands, and continue to be flabbergasted by the asking (and selling) price of winter fixed weeks and the dearth of July fixed weeks for comparison on Redweek ...so I decided to take a history class...

It's interesting in so many ways, to read how hard it was trade into MOC in 2007 (albeit easier than now), the discussions on whether to buy during the 2008 drop, how much the sales staff at MOC were making, and how the resident experts I've learned from in the last nine months here were presenting logical views, even back then. Then, of course, the voyeuristic feeling of reading the 2007 threads, knowing about the train wreck they were about to experience.

I hope to check back in ten years, when there's an AI system on the front-end of TUG for Q&As, but I expect I'll just be reading about GregTs and Mox's fun with their grandkids. ;-)

Here we are in 2017 and I can tell you even though my belief in Marriott never wavered I never thought 15 years later it would still be such a positive experience for us.

It all started for us in 2001 that when we purchased a GV 2BDRM Gold unit. Followed quickly by 2 Maui units direct from Marriott that I quickly realized would rent extremely well so now fast forward to 2017 we own 25 weeks in great places like Maui, So Cal, HHI, Myrtle Beach and Boston. Truly the best decision I ever made for my family in so many ways and 2017 was one of our best years renting our units.

Now I do have some concerns about the future because costs continue to go up but so far it has been manageable with overall value and the rental demand remaining high.

I hope we all have another 15 years of vacation fun just like the last 15!!

I think we can assume it's north of $35k and he uses his Marriott or Starwood card. :)

But guessing his upfront costs were less than this in 2008...

PerryM>>> 6) The most expensive unit sold here was $165,000 3BR week 52 at one of the new towers – the owner got it because he bought from Thanksgiving thru New Year’s week here ($900k in sales with NO discounts

I could buy half a year there now for that, but MFs would be rough. :)

It is interesting to read the old PerryM thread - I learned a lot from him.

I am also surprised by the pricing of some of these weeks, and continue to think lower pricing is coming. I'm sorry you've not yet found the weeks that you want and I hope to you do.

As MoxJo has said, I have no regrets on my purchases - and am continuing to buy. I love these things and the memories are priceless.

Thanks for the comments!

Best,

Greg

Actually it was a tad south of $35k, $34.5k thereabouts in 2017. I certainly didn't think back then our ownership would turn into 25 weeks but I did believe I could own several Marriott high demand units and rent them successfully to cover my costs. That proved to be 100% accurate as I've grown this into the 25 weeks we have now and have never not rented a unit at my desired price with the exception of 1 or 2 bad weeks I got assigned to with a purchase. Back then I was met with a ton of skepticism here on TUG and even from those closest to me who thought I had gone crazy but after our 1st four purchased retail we started scoring so great resale units and I was smart about what locations I bought and the Marriott brand did the rest. By far the best decision I've ever made for my family and it continues to pay huge dividends in so many different ways.

I've not had recent conversation with him, but it several years ago we were in touch and he had moved on from the timeshare world and had bought a condo at the property next to WKORV (Honua Kai??). He was renting it some of the time and occupying it some of the time. I think he still owns his Summit Watch and WM, but not really sure. He had some very creative ideas, and I've benefited from some of them -- and still do.

I hope he is well and comes back one day.

Best,

Greg

I also hope he's doing well.

As for leaving TUG, if I'm remembering correctly back when he developed his website and ebook about Marriott's DC Points system, he was told by the moderator at the time (DaveM) that he couldn't post anything related on TUG because he stood to gain personally from advertising his website/ebook. It was his choice then to stop posting anywhere on TUG, despite the "ban" applying only to Marriott DC Points-related content.
