I don't know how aware TUG is of LockPickingLawyer on youtube, but he's a great resource if you're at all interested in locks that are even vaguely hard to pick / bypass in less obvious ways than a crowbar or angle grinder.

He's why I really basically avoid Masterlock if at all possible - it's not just the above model that has pretty horrible flaws.

Pad locks and basically all locks are just a preventative measure to keep opportunists out. It's crazy that lock rakes, pick sets and other devices are available on Amazon. I do like the puck lock design with the hidden shackle even though I know a pipe wrench can break the shackle.

Are you into lock picking ?

I use Kryptonite locks for my electric bikes
I recognize it's mostly for show

I'm into the idea of maybe someday learning it lol. I first was interested in like 2008 so we can see how much progress I'm making lol. That said, maybe I expect too much (and TBH I don't really use locks like padlocks for anything) but it seems like if you're paying for something, defeating it ought to at least take bolt cutters or an angle grinder or skill...

Back in the 80's when my oldest Son was at CalTech his House had a specialty in defeating locks on Campus and playing jokes on Professors. ( They had also mapped all underground passages on Campus.) One of the Professors spent quite some time, thought, and energy designing an undefeatable Lock for his primary classroom. A couple days after he had it installed as was his habit he arrived early to prepare the Room for that day's classes. When he opened the door the entire first period was already inside laying in sleeping bags (all the chairs and tables had been removed).

Locks are simply to help keep honest people honest.

Usually what I see are kicked in doors, cordless tool use and the bolt cutter or pry bar damage. Never seen a picked lock that I know of. Occasionally I have to open a door for someone and there is no key. My options are master key or tools. My usual tool is the pipe wrench or cordless drill.

I guess what bothers me about this is it's kind of like a seat belt that doesn't latch through a crash and us saying "well, seatbelts keep safe drivers safe". I also feel like if they were advertised as "to lock your heart charm to a bridge" or "for lock-out tag-out" or "low security" that'd be fine by me, but they're sold as "high security".

I think this is why the non-pick resistant locks bother me though - how would you know if a lock was picked? Some of the masterlock padlocks are so bad, you can just whack them lightly and they open.

Lucky for us is that most people aren't inclined to be a thieving lock picking pos.
