Hi all..... We did Massanutten on an exchange two years ago and really enjoyed our vacation. The indoor waterpark was awesome, and it was christmas time - so snowtubing and indoor swimming made for an excellent vacation. We also really enjoyed doing the underground Luray Caverns about an hour or so away.

My question is - has anyone ever been here in the summer? We are looking to possibly getting a last minute reservation here in July..... and seem to think that maybe there wont be much to do during the summer time.....

Has anyone been here during the summer? What else did you find to do other than the waterpark?

We Took An October Week At Massanutten -- Had A Nice Time.

Our main impression of Massanutten is that they figured out how to make a ski resort into a year-round attraction.

We don't ski or golf or ride horses, but we had a nice time anyway staying a week at Woodstone At Massanutten in October 2008.

There are on-site activities galore, which don't cost much if you put up with the sales pitch & receive as reward 2 $99 activity cards. Crafts, massage, nature, tai chi, etc. Not boisterous hilarity, but pleasant & entertaining enough. Plus, they had evening entertainment in the ski lodge -- a very good magician, a comedy act, an Edgar Allan Poe impersonator doing readings & recitations in character. Even the timeshare tour was semi-entertaining, receiving the pitch as we did from non-stop talker Rita Midnight.

If you golf or ski or ride, seems like there would always be plenty to do at Massanutten.

There is a LOT to do in the area. I have 2 summer Massanutten weeks(June and August), and I still enjoy going every time. My husband plays golf, my daughter and I do the trailride, whatever kids/grandkids we have with us love the waterpark and pools/rec centers. Shopping in Harrisonburg:) Nice ride/trails in Shenandoah Natl Park, Frontier Culture Museum, drive down to Natural Bridge, Wine tours, Luray Caverns, Civil War sites..... Some weeks I just enjoy the entertainment and activities at the resort itselt, there is always something to do.

Here is the summer activity guide page. Lots to do but everything has a price. If you want to stay busy, buying the activity card for $99 adult/$69 kids will help. If you go to the waterpark at least 3 times and/or golf at least twice it almost pays for the card if you don't do any thing else. For a family of 4 you should plan on at least $600 in activity cost unless you plan on spending most of the time off site and using only the free pools.

In April and early May the tpu sale had most 2 bedroom summer weeks at 5 tpu's. I think nearly 100 summer units were taken in the last month.

also if you have children along - the recreation staff has soccer, softball....at the ballfield -my grandkids really enjoyed playing:) I think they have games a few mornings/afternoons during the week - FREE!!!

the days the kids play ball we just spend the rest of the day at the rec centers, a day at the waterpark, ride up the ski lift and hike up there one day, an off day(except possibly minigolf) with the magic show in the evening, day at Shenandoah and the comedian show in the evening, Frontier Culture Museum for the afternoon and late afternoon pingpong at the rec center...

Although it wouldnt be hard to do - I dont think we have ever spent 600 for 4 of us on activities:)

We've never been in the summer so maybe I've over estimated a bit. 3 days of water park and no activity card and you are already at $360 (for a family of 4). 3 days of water park w/activity card and you are at $556 and I am not sure if that includes tax or not. If you cut the water park down to only one day at $152 for the family it would keep the cost down.

I don't think its nearly as nice as Smugglers notch but for us it is a lot closer. Smuggs has the $345 Smuggs pass fee and has a 1 in 4 for the resort as a whole (except the Estates which you don't see too many summer weeks). With the higher tpu's required plus the pass fee it equals the extra $600 I am allotting to Massanutten. I just wish Massanutten had a shuttle or a better trail system to the various amenities so you wouldn't have to get in your car several times a day.

We went off season, and being two seniors, did not use the pool. We did lots of hikes, toured a battleground, underground cavern, antique browsing. We had a great time. Senior friends who do not hike and like to eat out in restaurants did not like it due to the need to drive to get anywhere.
