We do a MVL summer trip a few years ago. Had a fantastic stay. The resort is located near the edge of town, but you're still within easy access of shops, restaurants and shopping. I actually would walk to the grocery store each day with bag in hand picking up odds and ends -- with a nice mountain view as you walk. We enjoyed the dining in town -- nothing fancy just good BBQ or Mexican fare etc.
The resort sits across a creek and as such is near the lifts. In summer, hiking is right out the back door. Horseback riding availible nearby. My day began with a walk in the woods. Even hiked all the wall to the top of the ski runs.
Summit County has all sorts of trails and hikes. You can obtain a guide in town. The region is all about hiking and visita drives. One nice drive is to visit Leadville. The local book store or outfitters should have hiking info.
The resort felt pretty quiet and cozy to me in the summer. There is an outdoor pool which on a bright afternoon can be a nice place to hang out as you gaze at the mountains above you. We had a studio apartment which slept 4 ( one queen and a sofa bed ). All were in the same space. Unit had a full kitchen and eating area. I'd describe it as smallish, but comfortable and sort of a hybrid hotel/apartment feeling. There is no A/C but a fan is provided if you elect to hang around in the room during the day. We were on the go, so it's never an issue to us.
If you want to drive around and do some day hikes ( or more ), MVL is a good starting place. We're lookoing to go back again one summer if we can find the time given our other travels.
One thing to keep in mind. Breckenridge sits at somethine lilke 9500 ft. elevation. You will notice an altitude effect the first 24 to 48 hours, especially if you're a flatlander flying in from places like NJ etc. For most folks, this should be nothing more than a little shortness of breath if you walk too fast ( I could feel my heart racing the first night ). People with heart conditions might feel these effects in a more pronounced way. The effect goes away in a day or two.
