We have been owners at Marriott's Desert Springs II for 19 years. We always lock it off and exchange, but we stay in Villas I and II 3 or 4 times a year on II Getaways. The last 10 years or so we have found the housekeeping staff appears to be setting the in room alarm clock radios for early morning settings. The alarms are usually set in the main unit and the efficiency. It happens far too often to be accidental or something a previous occupant would do. And, it doesn't happen anywhere else we stay. In the past, I emailed the resort twice to let them know this was happening and no one responded each time. I'm just curious if this happens to anyone else staying at Desert Springs. We are here now and it happened again. You would think we would remember to check or unplug the clock radio, but they get us nearly every time we stay. LOL. And, we don't tip when it happens. Let me know if this happens to you. :)

We stayed there years ago, so I do not remember, but I have had it done in innumerable hotels and other time shares. I always check the alarm clock when we check in!!

I have stayed at both DSV 1 and 2 (both 2BR units). I think you are just getting coincidence in getting rooms where previous guests set the alarm clocks. I have not had issues. I usually set my alarm for 6am or earlier on most days even when I am on vacation but then I am usually awake before then. I do it on my cell as the room alarm clocks are too cumbersome to set.

Forgive me if this sounds rude but you don't tip because the alarm clock goes off and you are blaming the cleaning staff with no proof? Sounds very petty to me.

I have stayed at the Springs and Shadow Ridge a couple (+/-) times a year since 2001 and have encountered similar issues with the alarms. Seems like they usually go off in the 3-4 AM time periods. But not every stay. However, it has also happened at other facilities. I've just written it off as being turned on by the maids when they wipe down the clocks. But??????

I will tell you that housekeeping don't have time to mess around with the alarm clocks. With daylight savings changes, the clocks are consistently not reset - because they don't mess with clocks. I used to set alarms at 3/4am when I had a flight to catch, which makes a lot of sense that when previous guests have to wake up early on the last night/morning.

I've seen this at multiple locations, not just Marriott. One of the first things I do is check the alarm clock. I did have a similar experience at a Marriott some years ago when I had a 2-bed unit but we didn't use the lock-off and at ~5am we heard an alarm from next door and it took five minutes to realize it was from the studio of our unit - that wasn't fun.

Like others, I only use my iPhone alarm when traveling these days. More accurate, more reliable, and always gets the job done - usually better than thee hotel wake up calls, too.

I apologize in advance for somewhat highjacking or diverting this thread...

A couple of years ago we were traveling with my in-laws. They are old school/ low tech people who have trouble setting their alarm clocks. They complained that their high-tech I-pod capable, stereo alarm clock would go off in the early morning hours when they wanted to sleep. They couldn't figure out how to silence it so they just let it run until it gave up perhaps 10 minutes later.:crash: I told them to just unplug the alarm clock/radio and if that didn't work, to put it in the refrigerator

The next morning I asked them about the alarm. They said that even unplugged, that it "went off". Apparently it was one of those unusual clock radios where someone actually put in a battery. So after it went off, they put it into the freezer and it sat in there for the rest of the week. :hysterical:

I agree that it's most likely merely the previous occupants' setting that housekeeping hasn't undone. It has happened to me at hotels and timeshares all over the world - it's too easy to snooze the alarm long enough to get out of the room rather than actually turning the alarm to OFF, particularly when dashing to catch an ungodly early flight.

Sounds like a Conspiracy Theory to me.

Any chance Elvis or Lee Harvey Oswald were staying at Desert Springs Villas while you were there?

I have noticed alarm times set for very early hours on a few of our stays. Though the alarm was always off. So no rude awakenings for us.

I think as a PP indicated, it is likely a previous guest that had the alarm set and during cleaning the housekeeper accidentally turns the alarm back on. I don't think it is intentional, but I suppose anything is possible.

I agree - this has happened to me in hotels and ts all over the globe. I always travel with my own small alarm and use that, my phone, or a wake-up call if I need an alarm. The first thing I do is unplug the alarm clock. At most Club Intrawest locations, there is music playing in the CD player when you enter your unit and some of them are very complicated to turn off.

I'm the opposite for me using my Smartphone as my Alarm Clock is much simpler than those Hotel Alarm clocks especially the ones at Hilton. I just go into my Menu Alarms and Add an Alarm for when I travel and turn the fist one off. Problem solved and it works well.

If the Alarm Clock has a connection to my cellphone speaker jack I 'll listen to Internet Radio using the Hotel/Resort's Alarm clock speaker. The rest I'll leave alone.

At one resort they had these Smart Alarm Clocks that are hooked up to the Muzak System of the Hotel. So for some reason it was on the paging channel when you make a page. I would hear all the pages from the Front Desk. I tried turning the channel but for the life of me could not. So I just unplugged the damn thing and told the Front Desk that I didn't need to hear the pages.

Before I went to bed I heard what appeared to be the Fire Alarm System sounding over the alarm clock speaker. I was thinking who in the hell invented such an annoying system. Well I did some research and found out that you had to go into the Menu and Select Audio Channel#. Now could a Housekeeper figure out how to do this? Once the channel was set that was it.

I use my Smartphone for Internet Radio and leave it at that.
