This question may have been asked and answered, but I could not find any thread with my exact question.

Chase is offering a Marriott Rewards Visa card. With this card, members earn 5 Marriott Reward points for every dollar spent at Marriott (all brands).

My question is, if an owner pays their annual MF with this card, is it considered a Marriott transaction and therefore eligible for the 5x points per dollar; or is it considered a miscellaneous transaction and awarded only 1x point per dollar.

Has anyone had direct experience with this?

Thank in advance.

Yes, it does count as a Marriott transaction. Card has been great for us! Just be sure you get the Black card, and lots of points when you sign up.

See post #3 in this thread. There was a link open for a 70K Point bonus on signup for the Premier card. It worked for us earlier this year. There is no landing page for the application showing the offer, but it has been used by many on Flyer Talk also.

You automatically get 10 times points just for being a rewards member for Marriott stays, so when you use the Marriott Visa Premier, you get a total of 15 times. Non stay purchase are at 5 times, including maintenance fees and timeshare purchases if you ask for it (most of the time). You get one 1-4 level stay per year which offsets the annual cost of the card. If I remember correctly, purchases also help you attain higher MRP levels of Gold, etc. If you optimize everything, it's worth it...

The Premier card gives you 15 elite nights each year, which is enough for silver elite status. You get 10 points per dollar for hotel stays as a regular Marriott Rewards member, but as silver you get 12 points per dollar. The card gives you an additional 5 points per dollar. So if you use the card for Marriott hotel stays, you get 17 points per dollar

You can earn additional elite nights for every $3000 in spend on the card.

Elite Night?

You can earn additional elite nights for every $3000 in spend on the card.

Can someone explain what an "elite night" is?

Also, is it true that if you have the Marriott Visa you are barred from getting the Ritz-Carlton Visa card too?

Elite nights are nights earned annually by staying or other methods towards status levels.

15 silver
50 gold
75 platinum

Elite status get you additional perks in the program. Points gets you the free nights, travel packages etc.

Simply, Elite nights is supposed to be your measure of loyalty to the Marriott brand.

I was a member of Marriott Rewards long before I joined MVC. The Marriott Visa is a great way to accumulate points. We spent five wonderful days at the JW Guanacaste in February 2011 on a redemption. We have already accumulated enough points for another fabulous redemption. However, we have not yet decided where or when. Most of our vacations are spent timesharing or cruising.

You get one 1-4 level stay per year which offsets the annual cost of the card.

You get this the first year but if you get the black card you get a cat 1-5 each year after the first. That alone pays for the card and then some.

Correct, the cert when you first get the card is a cat 1-4, but it is 1-5 after that. We have only had the 1-4 so far with the wifes card, but have already put it to great use along with two 1-4 certs we got from the spring megabonus promo.

And now the Aruba Renn is a cat 5 again. We are extending our week next month at the OC by adding a few nights at the Renn. with my cert and my wife's.

IMHO, the card is a great value. My wife and I each have our own account. Helps push me to plat each year.

We got the Premier card when we first bought our timeshare and it has truly been rewarding to us. It is easy to accumulate points without trying. We use it for everything- gas, groceries,Dr.visits,Maintenance fees, etc. ,and pay it off monthly. We have2 nights booked with points at the beach in Aug. for a concert and 1 in St Augustine Autograph collection, while we're in Orlando. Our dream trip with points will be to Italy ,using the travel pkg. Planning on using this as our retirement reward!

Can you please explain the strategy here? Thanks

My husband and I also each have the black card. I usually put most of the hotel or vacation club nights on his rewards number, so we have enough nights to get to platinum. If we split them between the cards, we would not get there. Also, the category 5 free hotel nights each year more than pay for the annual fee on each card, and you will each get 50,000? or whatever the offer is now just for signing up and using it.

Recently we used one category 5 night at the Barcelona Renaissance, where I think the room with breakfast would have been close to 270+ euros, but being platinum, we had a beautiful buffet breakfast included, and late check out.

In Rome, we used rewards points earned from the card for 5 nights at the Marriott Grand Flora. I took a photo of the door info, which showed a price of 2430.00 euros a night. Now no one I know would ever pay that much ( it was a nice suite with a huge terrace) but it is listed on the Marriott site for $569, and I doubt that would have the gorgeous terrace. Being platinum gave us the rooftop buffet breakfast every morning. So the card can be quite useful. Also, if you both have a card, and both have points, when you do use them for a travel package, or hotel nights, you may combine points if you need to.

We just used our free night at the LA Marriott on S. Figueroa while vising our son over Memorial Day. We have used it in the past at the Renaissance in Aruba. We collect reward points and have been to Paris, Maui, Amsterdam, NYC, and London (several times) using these points for hotel stays and airfares. Planning to go to London and either Edinburgh or Copenhagen next summer. Love reward points.
