I was just looking at my MR Profile and notice I had the option to earn points or miles. If I'm reading this correctly, I can earn 2 miles for every point rather than the typical 1 point per dollar spent on my Marriott card.

On your MR Visa, do you choose miles or points? I fly Delta and it's appealing to earn 2 miles per dollar compared with my Delta Amex that only pays out 1 mile per dollar.

And with about $12k in maintenance fees coming up, I now have to weigh the prospect of 24,000 SkyMiles or 60,000 MR Points. What would you choose?

I build up my Marriott points to use for a 5 day travel package which is a great value.

Isn't this unrelated to cc charges? With CC charges, you get 2 SPG per $ using SPG Amex = 6 MRPs; Marriott Visa = 5 MRPs.

I recall a long time ago that when you have hotel charges, you get to choose credit to MRPs or Airline miles. I don't remember how many MRPs that you earn when you pay for the night. It has been many years since I paid for a Marriott stay.

I'm more concerned about the conversion to Airline miles.
I think on Every day purchases the MR Visa is a 1:$1 ratio.
Maintenance fees are a 5:$1 ratio
Hotel stays are typically a 10:$1 ratio

Looking at the 5 day packages, the lowest package is 235,000 MRP. If I achieved this with just Maintenance Fee payments on my MRP, this converts to $47,000 in spend. If I was getting miles with this $47k, I'd only receive 94,000 miles vs the 120,000 miles on the lowest package. I think I've answered my question.

And with the SPG card, the 235,000 MRP is the equivalent of $39166 in spend using the 6MRP:$1 version.

Looks like I'm better off just sticking with the points as I really only use the card to pay my maintenance fees.

Depends on your goals/needs. If you do not have a large points balance (anywhere close to being able to get a travel package with nights and miles), then the miles may make more sense if you are planning future air travel. On the other hand, 60k MRPs can be worth up to 5 nights of accommodations at a Category 3 hotel (or even a Category 4 hotel if using a Points Saver rate) with the 5th night free points redemption benefit. Like I said, it all depends...

The card is 5 points per $1 on any Marriott spend and 1 point per $1 on all Non-Marriott spend. Glad you found a solution that fits you.

And 2 points per $1 on airline, car rentals and restaurants.
