Marriott Resorts in Colorado

I was wondering if someone here could compare the Marriott resorts in Vail to the Westin Riverfront in Avon. I have stayed at WRF, but have never even seen the Marriott resorts. I like the Vail area better than Avon, but Avon is pretty close. I also see some availability in Breckenridge, so comparisons for that resort would also be welcome.

I would be looking at going sometime near Memorial Day at the end of May next year. It looks like the Marriott properties don't have air conditioning. They mention laundry facilities on site, so I assume no. washer/dryer in the units either.

Do the Marriott properties provide mid-week cleanings? WRF does but I think the Sheraton properties don't, unless you are stying 10 or more days.

It looks to me like the Marriott properties might be a step or two below the Westin. Would they be similar to the Sheraton Steamboat, sans A/C?

We stay at the Streamside properties pretty often (in fact we're headed there tomorrow).

They don't compare to the Westin Riverfront. The Evergreen building is the nicest, but I'd probably put the room below most any other MVC property that I've stayed at. It does have Air Conditioning and a washer and dryer, but the other Streamside buildings do not. The Birch building is the worst, and the Douglas building has it's charms (and my kids really like it when we get a unit with a loft).

As far as resort amenities are concerned, Streamside is very dated and doesn't really compare to other MVC resorts.

You need to take a shuttle to get into town, as it's a couple of miles away, or you'd need to drive and park to go into Vail.

In a nutshell, Streamside was an old timeshare (probably first built in the 70's) and was acquired by Marriott. So it feels a lot like a smaller, independent resort.

I know it sounds like I'm being pretty negative about the property and I am, but I've still gone there 4 times over the last 13 months. The pool while pretty crummy by most standards is actually heated really well (even better than the Westin Riverfront) so my kids love it. They also love the indoor basketball hoop, and the Sauna. We live in Colorado, so it's just a couple of hours away for us and it is VERY cheap on points...it makes for a fun, quick getaway and availability is plentiful, so we can often get a couple of rooms and invite friends.

If you're traveling from out of state, I'd probably be a little disappointed.

I've only gone to the Breck property once about 10 years ago, and it seemed on par with Streamside from a "niceness" perspective, but it is right in downtown breck and a very short stroll to the slopes.

If you are going around Memorial day I wouldn't worry about the lack of AC. It could be a problem from mid June through the end of August, but I doubt you'd even use it in late May or early June.

We’ve stayed at WRF, MVC Evergreen and MVC Breckenridge.

WRF unit is very nice as you know, but we didn’t care that much for Avon compared to being closer to/in Vail. We like the Evergreen villa quite a bit and it was purpose-built by MVC rather than being an acquisition. They only have 2BRs, but we like the space even when it’s just the two of us. And they have AC. We usually go in the summer, so it’s nice to have that feature. You wouldn’t need it in late May. We’ve seen a unit in Douglas, but have not stayed in it. They have 1BRs, so that’s a plus. The unit had a unique feel to it, but we still prefer Evergreen.

We like taking a walk along the creek to Lionshead and sometimes all the way to Vail Village. The MVC has a shuttle that will take you there as well as to the Safeway grocery store.

Another great option if you can reserve it is the Ritz Residences in Lionshead. Very few units are available and they only have 2 and 3 BR units. They require more points than the others, but it’s well worth it to some.

The MVC in Breckenridge is in a nice spot, very close to Main Street. It isn’t fancy, but the 1BR unit was comfortable. We enjoy spending some time in Vail and add on a few more days in Breck. Otherwise, it’s an easy day trip from Vail or Avon.

We arent fans of MVC in Breckenridge. We often stay at Hyatts resort next to it, Main St Station and it is a few steps down from it. They do share a common pool and location is nice.

We typically take a mountain vacation near Vail or Park City every year late in August. We enjoy mountain scenery, hiking, and low humidity. We've stayed at the MVC and Ritz Residence in Vail, Westin Riverfront in Avon, and both MVC resorts in Park City. The WRF is now our favorite because of its facilities, location and balcony. Avon doesn't have the touristy shopping areas of Vail, but there are good restaurants within walking distance that are more affordable than those in Vail or Lionshead. It is only a 15 minute drive to Vail and public transportation is available nearby. There is a convenient Bustang stop across the street and they offer reasonable bus service to Glenwood Springs or Denver. The Costco and Eagle airport are both only about 20 minutes west of Avon. We were fortunate to see a bear from our balcony walking along the river. We have not yet stayed at the Sheraton in the area, but may consider it if the WRF isn't available.

Thanks, everybody! It is helpful to read all the comments. It sounds like Evergreen might work for us.

Speaking of Park City, how does that area and properties there compare to the MVC Streamside properties?

We've been to WRF twice and like it. We've used the public transportation to Vail, and it is convenient. We flew into Eagle once, and drove from Texas a second time. We probably won't be driving again. It was just too far and it is better for us to fly and rent a car. I think we'd like to stay in Vail, if possible. The Ritz looks nice but availability is not very good when I've checked.

I retired this year, and plan on using our timeshares a lot more going forward. I own a few weeks in Maui, and they convert to a lot of Club Points to use elsewhere. The other locations we want to go to are Hilton Head and Florida Beaches. I don't know which are the nicest properties there, among the several MVC options. I'm just starting to research those. We do like the nicer properties, when available. If I had a choice, I'd only stay in Westin resorts. Of course, they're not available in many locations. We like the beach and mountains. We do not ski, so mountains visits are outside of snow season. Some of the city locations (Washington DC, Boston, NYC) might be nice if you've never been to those places.

If you are not skiing there is no reason to go to the Streamside properties in West Vail.
They are NOT in the town and not walking distance.
They are very close to I-70 and not much else.
You are much better off at the Westin.
Comparable to staying at a 5 star hotel versus a 2.5 star.

I agree with that. I love Westin.

Westin used to provide free shuttles to Vail and Beaver Creek. Makes staying there an easier choice, is that's still included.

Both MVC Park City resorts are a lot nicer than Streamside. Summit Watch is better if you want to be located in town, but we prefer Mountainside because it has a nicer pool and is adjacent to mountain hiking trails and a summer resort. Another advantage is that Park City is only 45 minutes to Salt Lake City airport.

For Florida, we highly recommend Crystal Shores over Singer Island. You just need to plan ahead. May and late October are our favorite times to avoid high cost and large crowds.

This year, the shuttle was free when we first got there before Memorial Day, but then they started charging a fee to go to Vail. The public bus across the street ran more often and was free.
