I am no longer a Marriott Owner but have had a relationship with Marriott for many years starting out with their Hot Shoppe drive ins (in Philadelphia and DC) back in the early 50s then the purchase of a pre-construction Sabal Palms Week when they started building TS Resorts. Because I could exchange my Sabal Palms Week for what were then valuable Marriott Rewards Points I became a dedicated Marriott user when I traveled. I have a couple of observations. First, my how things have evolved and Second, I should have bought their stock...

What’s your point? I bought Marriott stock as an employee for them for 10 years. I was in my 20’s. They have been fruitful and multiplied. I still own them!

I'm guessing that may have been the point and if he had purchased stock as you did, he would have enjoyed seeing them be 'fruitful and multiply' for him as well.

We never have a crystal ball on these things. Savings will generally work out better than savings, but remember we usually always see the "survivors". There are plenty of investments that go belly up. I'm sure anyone who worked for Enron and had their savings in company stock would have very different sentiments.

Yeah! Since Apple IPO in 1980, it's averaged 18% / year. I am sure there are better returns too.

My daughter started working for Apple when in college in 2006 just before the Iphone was introduced. Putting 10% of her earnings into their employee stock purchase plan as a part time worker for 3 years, her investment grew to an amazing $40,000 allowing her to put the down payment on her home purchase in 2014!

I bought a few hundred Apple shares in fall 2008 when the market tanked. In the 11 years since, my annual return is almost 33% per year. AAPL is at $283/share today, my split-adjusted cost basis is $12.50/share. Sold a few shares here and there along the way, but still own most of it. It's amazing what that company has been able to accomplish.

I was on a corporate visit at apple a few years ago (I was an IT strategy guy before I retired) and the treasurer at the time gave us a presentation in which he shared that apple's market cap was around $5B in 2000 and recently bumped $1T not bad growth for a 30 year old company :). I bought in a year or two later at a cost basis of around $70 so a bit later than you but still my best performer
