Trying to plan a travel certificate to NY....would fellow tuggers suggest the Courtyard NY Manhanttan/5th Avenue OR the NY Marquis Times Square location for the hotel? They both look good and are category 7. We want to be able to walk to as much as possible and enjoy our trip to NY (DH has never been to NY!)

Thanks,
Barbara

I vote for the Marriott Marquis. We stayed there 3 years ago and had a great time. If you're going to some shows, the Marquis is within a 5 to 10 minute walk to many of the theatres. While there we also walked to the Letterman Show, Tavern on the Green in Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Station, Macy's and Madison Square Garden. All fairly easy walks.

We just returned today from a 7 night stay at the Marquis. It is a nice hotel in a great location. You are dead in the heart of Times Square, so theater options are abundant. The TKTS booth is also in the Marquis now, so it's handy (last week, the lines were huge!) It is also convenient to a couple of subway stations, so you can get anywhere in the city.

Another advantage of the Marquis, if you are a platinum or gold Rewards member is you would have access to the Concierge lounge. I've not stayed at a Courtyard in Manhattan, but I doubt it has a lounge.

I hope that helps a little.

try the marriott east side

If you are looking for a little quieter at night then try the east side Marriott. It is a little smaller and just as convenient to everything mentioned above. We prefer to stay there away from all the noise of TSq.

try the east side Marriott

I second this vote. I just stayed at the East Side Marriott last week. The points cost was lower than the other mentioned locations.
We drove down from our house, as we were going to a wedding. The $50/day parking fee is a little steep, but it is Manhattan!

LuvyourMarriotts,

Next time you need to park in Manhattan, check out this NYC Parking Garages
link - Great site with comparative pricing info

Marriott Marquis. You can walk to so many places here. It is where the action is and only a few steps away from most shows.

While the East side of the city is certainly lovely, staying there is nowhere as convenient as staying at the Marqui. For a first visit to the city you want to be in the heart of the action.

Besides the theaters being in walking distance, the transportation hub is close by and there is easy access to wherever you might want to go. Shopping, museums, etc. are all walkable or a quick bus or subway ride away (depending upon how much you like to walk).

Have a great trip!

FWIW,
I went to a convention at the Marquis in May and stayed in the Courtyard because all of the rooms at the Marquis were booked.

There is absolutely no comparison in my opinion. Although the Courtyard is only about five blocks south of the Marquis, it's nothing to write home about. You get the standard stuff at Courtyard and the room was comfortable. You also get free internet.

The Marquis has multiple bars and restaurants, it's own Broadway production, and is electric with a constant bustle. You are literally in the middle of Times Square, and if you can get a good view, you won't forget it.

Go with the Marquis.

Yes, the Marriott East side was a Cat 6, but alas, Marriott upped it to a 7, so the only Cat 6 Marriott is the New York Marriott Financial Center (which isn't a bad location but is really dead at night, so for your first visit, not where I'd recommend you stay). Both are nice hotels (much better than most any Courtyard) and the East Side is still a great location (by the Waldorf, St Patrick’s, Roc center, c park, 5th ave) - just not as crowded as Times Square. But if it's your first time in the city you may not mind all the mobs of people outside your hotel and the 1/2 hour it takes to walk 3 blocks.

As far as Courtyards go, they are the last place we ever try and stay. They are the least bang-for-the buck property Marriott has (but therefore the best margins $$$).

There is the hustle and bustle of the city in that location, but don't scare Barbara -it is easy to negotiate through the streets and, unless you are stopping a lot to window shop, it will only take a few minutes to walk the blocks there.
Been there-done that- many, many times, since I live less than an hour from the city and my daughters live in Manhattan, so I do know the area well.

THank you ALL for the input. Now I just need to get the reservation! :) We are also going to DC but I fear that trying to get into the JW Marriott with points there is going to be difficult.

Marquis

Marriott Marquis is the PERFECT location. I'm a New York and still love it there....:)

I don't know what dates you're looking for. I checked the Marquis. If it's in early 2008 they have std availabilities from Jan 23 to Feb 15. No New Year's eve nights, but a 6 night std stay from Jan 1. Lot's of std rooms in October, so I'm assuming you'll get in OK.

Great city.

Brian

BTW ... quality rooms go for about $560 a night on the MAR site, so that calculates out to about $3900 for the week paying cash (and then you have taxes too).

Hi

we're staying in New York for a two nights on our way to Williamsburg, I picked the Reanissance in Times Square, mainly due to better reviews on trip Advisor, but the Residence Inn also gets good reviews, now have looked at Marriott Marquis too, decisions, decisions!

For DC, you won't go wrong with the JW, Renaissance Mayflower, or Renaissance Washington DC Hotel; Marriott Metro Center is okay.

Marriott Crystal Gateway is nice and very near National Airport and the Crystal City underground in Alexandria, VA. It literally sits on the metro and is a ten minute subway ride into the middle of DC. You'll never have trouble getting reservations.

THanks for the DC update. I keep looking on line for the JW DC location and it never appears available for pts. :( So we shall see if I get lucky (I'll keep looking and checking). I also try and look for the Grand Residence Inn in Tahoe (we stayed there once on a last minute trade) and I never see THAT either. A VC once told me its NEVER for points.

THanks for the advice about DC.

Are you staying for a week in DC as well? If just a couple of days it might not be the best use of points....

Last month we stayed at the Residence Inn Timesquare and we totally loved it. The room is bigger than any Marriott we stayed in NYC (Marquis, Courtyard Midtown, Renaissance)The furnishing is brand new. There is a full size fridge, microwave and a dishwasher. Living area with a sofa and chair and a 'desk' area which is an extension of the breakfast counter.

It is category 7 hotel and well worth it. We walked to Macy's (few blocks), Bloomingdale and Saks Fifth Ave (a little far but walkable). We also walked to Spamalot.

I definitely will stay there again next time. Free breakfast buffet was not great but adequate. :) :)

If you are searching for std points availability at the JW Marriott Hotel Pennsylvania Avenue, I just searched Sept - Nov and except for a week mid month Sept and Oct there were plenty of 7 night stays available. Are you searching properly?

Reanissance in Times Square

The Reanissance in Times Square is also a very nice hotel. Not as big as the Marquis but centrally located.
:)
