Marriott MRP Status for Exchanges

I just wanted to share something that I did not know was happening until recently. I know that I have always received 7 nights of credits (towards Silver Elite, Gold Elite and Platinum Elite Status) with Marriott rewards for staying at my home resort. However, until my recent exchange into Newport Coast this last June, I never remembered to give my Marriott rewards number to the front desk for an Interval Exchange. So, obviously, I received very few points as the only money I spent was at the bar/restaurant, but I did notice that I got 7 nights credit towards next years Status.

This is great news for me since I have 28 more nights planned in Interval Exchanges for the rest of 2010, so I will hit Gold Status this year. I usually only hit Silver Elite. So, for everyone else, when you do an II exchange into Marriott resorts, make sure to give them your Marriott Rewards Number.

Oh, just to add, this also works for Priceline and Hotwire trips. Marriott will not give you points for those stays (for the room cost, you will get them for other things you charge to the room), but you will get Nights credit.

Yeah, my husband reached Gold status the same way. We even got credit for 7 nights for an exchange we had to cancel last minute which had his MR # attached to it. Apparently the folks who ended up with it, didn't give them their MR # or didn't have one. Oh well, our gain. He even got credit for their purchases to the villa and got an e-mail copy of the bill.:whoopie:

That's funny. Well, the same thing happened to me this year with a rented Marriott unit. Rented out the unit, but since the unit was still in my name, and the renter never gave his/her MR number, I got credit for 7 nights. Of course, the person did not spent $1 at the resort, so no points, but you don't look a Gift Horse in the mouth.

I don't think you'll get elite nights credit for 3rd party stays (Priceline & Hotwire). You will receive points for $$ charged to your room if it is linked to your MR account number, but since you paid Priceline for the room Marriott doesn't give you nights credit.

I've read on flyertalk that this is the official policy, but some may have received nights credit anyway.

I guess that makes sense. When I was doing the math for this years stays, I thought they were one night short (for a PL stay), so your comment explains it. They did list it, but I probably did not get a nights credit.

What does Gold get you? I've never hit it, but have come close a few times. Frankly, I don't know what Silver Elite gets you, either, other than a door key with that printed on it.

Not a hell of a lot frankly, but you get a 30% bonus on every dollar spent (20% bonus for Silver Elite), you get a special reservation line and a few other things. The main thing that Gold gets is guaranteed availability at all resorts. So, if you need a night in Hawaii for the front end or back end of your TS stay, they claim to guarantee you a room.

The main reason to get status is that they will often upgrade you, or make sure you get a great view. There is no guarantee, but it is similiar to FF mileage status. My friend who flies all of the time gets free upgrades to Business/First class all of the time. I have been upgraded on my Hotel room a few times when I had Hilton Status. I don't have a lot of experience with Marriott status, but I hope they do something.

Same thing happened to me - got 21 nights this way!

It takes platinum status to get a guaranteed availability. And you have to reserve your room at least 48 hours in advance. Both gold and platinum get access to the concierge lounge which can be a great benefit if you're staying at a full service Marriott. I'm not sure about golds, but if the lounge is closed on the weekends, platinums normally get vouchers for a free breakfast in the restaurant. Although we've found you have to ask for it instead of it being offered.

There are a couple of other nice things about Gold status. You get free breakfast for whoever's in the room, and free Internet access. That doesn't mean anything at a Fairfield or Courtyard, where those are free anyway, but can save a bunch at a Marriott or Renaissance, where you normally pay extra.

I pretty sure it's 25% for Gold (50% for plat).

With the roll over nights they have been offering it's pretty easy to obtain gold, especially if you have the black Marriott/Chase visa card. I have Gold this year (56 nights credit) and I've only actually stayed 14 nights including t/s stays.

We had two consecutive weeks at SurfWatch this year, both had our MR number attached. But our son drove down to meet us the second week and stayed at a Courtyard the same night that we switched rooms at SurfWatch. We made his reservation through our account and the MR# was automatically attached. Well, last week I had to call and ask them to remove his night from our Elite status (which I never expected to be credited since the room was in his name) so that our 7 nights for the week could be counted. It appears that because his room was for one night, 6/28, and our check-in for the second week was also 6/28, the computer wouldn't accept the 7 nights because it showed a double night for the 28th. Always count your nights, make sure you're getting the credit! (This is a bit tougher to keep track of now with VISA spending also earning Elite nights.)

By far the best benefit of Gold (and therefor also platinum) is the EEO certificates. They are essentially a BOGO certificate that you can use for weekend stays at JW, Marriott and Renaissance properties. They can't be used at resorts. We have used them a couple of times since making gold on timeshare stays.

There is no free breakfast offered at Courtyard properties. It may be offered to elite guests, but not to everyone. They usually offer a hot buffet for $12-$14 per person.
The free Internet doesn't mean anything at Fairfield and Courtyard, as it is free there anyway.

We had concurrent stays like this last November. Had a week booked at MGV using an exchange (or perhaps it was a getaway) and also booked a single night that overlapped this at Ocean Pointe. No problem getting night credits for Ocean Pointe and Grande Vista.

WHEW!! Just a heads-up if anyone hasn't come across this yet, but the annual nights credited for the VISA card (depending on the card, 15 for us) show up this year in the same "Marriott Rewards Credit Card" category as the nights you earn for spending. I don't know where they showed before (because the spending credit is new this year,) but this morning when I logged onto marriottrewards.com I damn near had a heart attack thinking somebody got a hold of the card and had charged up $45K!!

Shows you how much of a points/status junkie I am - I considered for just a second NOT calling Marriott for an explanation, thinking that they'd take the nights away once I confirmed fraud activity on the card. :hysterical:

.

I am confused. You said that the EEO certificates can be used at JW, but then you said they cannot be used at Resorts. Aren't most of the JW properties resorts?

They're so inconsistent, aren't they? During the same phone call where I was trying to figure out why the 7-night credit for the SurfWatch week didn't post, she told me that we did get double credit for the two rooms we stayed at the Courtyard midway through our drive home. She said the difference is that the rewards account holder needs to be staying in one of the rooms for concurrent stays at the same resort. But that doesn't fit your double credit, does it? Oh well, win some-lose some.
