Hello All,

Just came back from an awesome Waikiki trip (we stayed at the Hilton Lagoon Tower for the trip) with family group of 26 and have started discussions for our 2019 destination.

We've narrowed it down to Hawaii and debating whether we go to Maui or go back to Oahu but stay at Ko'Olina this time. I was hoping for some feedback on the following:

  1. With a party of 26 people, is it much easier to get multiple units via Interval in one location over the other?

  2. We are flexible on travel dates, which months/periods has better availability?

  3. If you had to pick which resort, which one would you recommend for a large multi generation family vacation?

Thanks in advance!

Ko'Olina is a much easier II trade for multiple units. Fall in to December is perhaps the easier exchange to get. The best one is perhaps the easiest to get and that would be Ko'Olina. Though I think many prefer Maui.

There's more to do and see on Maui, especially if you've already spent time on Oahu. I do believe Ko'Olina would be the easier trade for that many people. How many villas would you need, and what are you using for trade bait?

I love and prefer Maui but we are doing our family reunion at Ko Olina for exactly this reason. I am much more confident in MKO trades than MMO and we need several trades to match.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Best,

Greg

Marriott 2BR units - Oceana Palms, Ocean Pointe, Manor Club (all summer weeks)

I just spent 9 nights in Oahu but I really didn't get to do all the things I wanted to do because I spent some of the time with family I only see on this vacation instead who wanted to do other things. So I don't think I'll be bored yet. I think after the 2nd time for sure, I may be looking for another island

probably 4 2BR units or preferably a 3BR unit + 3 2BR unit. May need a couple of studios as well for late comers who decide later.

I agree with others that your chances are much better with Ko Olina.

It is also a beautiful resort with very nice pools. There is no traditional beach, but has lagoons off of the ocean. Much safer for young kids, but no wave action. You would have to drive to a beach for that.

Good luck with your trade efforts. Sounds like you are trading high demand seasons, so that will help.

Best regards.

Mike

Also include April/May for Ko Olina based on bulk sightings

+1

We also prefer Maui, but agree with the others that Ko Olina will be an easier trade. But if you can arrange the trip between Labor Day and mid-December (excluding Thanksgiving), I don't think Maui is impossible.

Thanks I think we have narrowed down to week before Memorial Week. Hoping airfare will be cheaper if we go before as well. Doable?

Thanks! Unfortunately that timeframe doesn’t work for all. So based on the above, Ive gotten my family to near 100 percent consensusfor Koolina.

I can use DC points for Maui or Ko Olina for booking but points for Maui are so much higher

MKO will be much much easier.
Plus, if you do book 3 units at Maui (good luck with the 3br), if they're not both in MM1 (same tower) or MMO, it's a hike to move back and forth from tower to tower or across the MM1/MOC phases. Ask me how I know.

I do love Maui, but with 26 peeps.....Yikes. Would also make restaurants and activities a bit tough. Maui is a busy place.

Both resorts are fantastic. We prefer Maui Ocean Club (location and ocean), but love Ko Olina nearly as much. We were at both in February. Both are top quality resorts on fantastic islands where a large extended family could have a great time at with activities, food, relaxing, etc. Both also have fantastic sunsets! Jealous!

+1 - Ko Olina will be much easier to obtain multiple II exchanges during the same time period. It has more rooms, slightly less demand, etc. I'd shoot for multiple 2BRs. The 3BRs at MKO are a more challenging exchange, given a limited number of those villas.

Thanks for that info on the 2 different towers. The issue of the original MOC with no full kitchen would be an issue for our group. I'm glad you revalidate our choice to go with Ko'Olina. With 26 people, we have one dinner out together with reservations. The rest of the time, breakfast is always in the "get together 3BR villa" so who ever wants breakfast comes in the morning. Lunch for the most part depends on which group you're with and dinner we usually cook and eat in.

Funny, I only realized how large our family vacation is when I see people's expressions and reactions when I mention it LOL. It is definitely exhausting and fun at the same time. I have been blessed with being tasked the family travel agent and "social director" of vacations LOL. I really do love my timeshares, it allows us all to get together in fantastic resorts/places that would have been cost prohibitive in the absence of ownership :)

the 3BR I will book using DC points. Is Ocean View versus Mountain View 3BR worth the extra points? Or is there another reason other than the view category such as building placement that would make one category more preferable than the other considering I will have multiple units?

I believe 3bdrm MV are all I n the Naia building (southern most) and have at least a partial ocean view (and the marina + port). But you do need to get a high floor to minimize the view of the parking lot.

If you use dc points, and you choose 1 entrance 2br units, you will be in NAIA tower as that is the only one with non lockoffs. The problem with trading is that you might get a unit that is non lockoff and 2 that are lockoff. While you might be all in one tower you might get spread between 2 towers. As the lockoffs are mostly in moana and kona towers. NAIA does have a few lockoffs but there are only 2 or 3 per floor.
