That was a mouthful.

Often times, I will make reservations 10-11 months out and be short points. Marriott.com would tell me I was short and that I had to have the needed points a week before arrival. I really liked that policy. Allowed me to make the reservation and not tie up points. Sometimes I wouldn't want points attached if I would be getting a Chase certificate etc.

Well, according to a FT thread (and tested by me), Marriott.com now deducts all points in your account if you are short and tells you how many more you have to earn.

Not a nice development IMHO.

Two ways around this: You can call to reserve. Request that points not be deducted. That seems to work. You can also make a "dummy" booking to empty your account. Make the real reservation. Cancel the dummy reservation and restore your points. A bunch of extra steps.....

The latter seems to be an easy enough work around. I used this often if I wanted to use a travel package certificate that I didn't have yet but enough points in there for the week long booking. I would book enough to make my points balance less than the weeks reservation, then mane the weeks reservation and cancel my initial booking. Now I just have to make a long enough initial reservation to burn all the points.

It seems that they want people to actually have the certificates before making the reservation? Instead of trying to work around the system.

I agree-and have done this for the same reason as you. I always like the fact that Marriott.com trusted I would have the needed points within one week of arrival. I viewed that as a program benefit. Now gone.
