Hi All,

I will be heading to PV in a few weeks with a large group of people, ages from 2 to 65. I see that during our stay, there will be a Mardi Gras parade on the Malecon.

Has anyone attended this? And how family friendly is it? Looks like a great time, but some members of our group are not comfortable in boisterous crowds, while others are ready to lead that parade.

Any thoughts?

Pam

I don't have experience with Carnival in PV, but have gone to Mazatlan (third largest Carnival in the world) for several years. The parades are at night, and there is significant revelry, loud music, and alcohol consumption. Those who enjoy a party are welcome, and those who prefer quiet time will be more comfortable staying around the resort those few evenings. As always, in crowds, be aware of your surroundings, and don't flaunt valuables.

We went to the Mardi Gras parade in Puerto Vallarta last year. We had heard about it so headed down to the Malecon for supper. Stopped on the way back to hotel to watch. It was entertaining and quite boisterous. iT was not like New Orleans, much smaller and very little being thrown from the floats. it might have been my eyesight but not a lot of locals on the floats. Mostly expats but an interesting time anyway. Enjoy yourself.

We were going to attend this last year but decided to head to Mazatlan's carnival. Looking at you tube for the Puerto Vallarta Mardi Gras parade led me to believe this is an alternative lifestyle event more than a traditional event like that in Mazatlan. Im not sure I would take my grandkids to the PV event as it looks a little risque.

Mardi Gras Parade

Hi everyone,

Safely, but sadly, back from another great time in PV. AlbertaTravel, we did the same as you, headed downtown for a good dinner, then picked a spot on the Malecon to watch the parade.

We were a group of 10-12, from 2 to 60. Everyone had a great time. The members of our group who are not happy with being on their feet a lot, or in crowds, stayed back at the resort. We decided to throw ourselves into the spirit of the parade, and wore feather boas, glow in the dark accessories, and piled on our own beads.

There were spicy elements to some of the floats, but nothing I would term risque. Lots of sequins, sparkle and eye catching costumes, the participants were posing and dancing to the energetic music, the mood was very celebratory.

if I was back in PV at the same time another year, it would be on my list of "must see"

Thanks Pam, good to know about the parade. How long was the event time wise ? Was it only on the view-able on the blocks along the malecon ?

Mardi Gras PV

Hi Bill,

I would say it was about an hour to an hour and a half long. It started at the Sheraton, moved along the Malecon and ended up in the romantic zone.

The floats were varied, some representing hotels, nightclubs, clothing stores, as well as community and artistic groups.
