It was odd the freakout we saw in the media over Bahamas recently being raised to Level 2 when much of the western world was already a Level 2...

Could be a case of mixing it up with the Level 3 issued for Jamaica around the same time.

By all rights, the US should be "other."

I've been to an awful lot of the orange level three countries. A couple reds. And unless my eyes are failing me, all of the "others." The US is squarely an "other." Some of the "increased precaution" choices are laughable.

We're in "physician, heal thyself" territory with this map.

How to travel safely in Greenland ...

"You should, therefore, always keep a good and safe distance from both icebergs and glaciers, as it is impossible to predict when they will break.

and "Walrus attack"

:D (I just googled for Greenland travel safety, since it shows here as a level 2.)

What does “other” mean??:ponder:
I believe those are countries where the warning differs based on region. Mexico, for example, has warning levels from 1 to 4 depending on the state you are traveling to in Mexico.

Where did the map originate from
Did it come from the State Department?
Would like to see the link back to the source

I would argue there are some regions of the CONUS and HI and AK that are RED.
As well as the US Territories PR, USVI, Guam etc.

Since Greenland belongs to Denmark, its status is likely determined by that of European Denmark, which has been beset with some migrant crime and violence, but I don't think that is true of Greenland.

Turkey and Italy both have Blue Level 2 alerts. I’m thinking wait, whoa! I really want to go to Turkey when we tour Europe (Dad was in the military and we were stationed there 5 years) but it hasn’t been safe in the last many years.

We’re going to Italy which I know to be safe—how is it that they share the same alert levels?

Italy: There was a demonstration outside the US consulate in Naples

Turkey:
Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Turkey. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, and other public areas.

Security forces have detained tens of thousands of individuals, including U.S. citizens, for alleged affiliations with terrorist organizations based on scant or secret evidence and grounds that appear to be politically motivated. U.S. citizens have also been subject to travel bans that prevent them from departing Turkey. Participation in demonstrations not explicitly approved by the Government of Turkey, as well as criticism of the government (including on social media), can result in arrest.

I know a guy….He is an experienced traveler and has been to Asia many times. He left last week for Pakistan. Said he may try to go into Afghanistan if they accept his documents at the border. Because it is such a beautiful country. I hope he isn’t one of those people we read about in the paper. SMH

Was just in Italy. They have issues in the south. Basically south of Rome, so Naples. My test is will a car rental company insure the vehicle for theft. South of Rome NO.

The train station outside Naples is not the cleanest of places and not a tourist stop. Turned me off to Naples as a place to go. That said my 6'4" son and I had no issues, but I would not like to be there at night regardless.

Athens was also a bit gritty but it is deemed "Safe" so I'd say use your eyes.

Nicer hotels zones tend to be kept safer than most and daylight hours make it less of an issue.. To me, the ratings seem to be only be Terrorism and not a personal safety measure.
