History

After a decade of study and collaboration, the Manhattan Project National Historical Park became a reality in 2010. Consisting of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Hanford, Washington; and Los Alamos, New Mexico, MAPR preserves the history and tells the story of the birth of the atomic age in America

Dawn of the Atomic Age

This site tells the story about the people, events, science, and engineering that led to the creation of the atomic bomb, which helped end World War II.

I went to Oak Ridge as a kid, can't lay my hands on it, but still remember the irradiated dime in a pop-in plastic holder. Went to Los Alamos last year, having dealt with nuclear weapons my whole career, it was quite interesting to me. Maybe Hanford, Washington is next.

We did the Hanford tour a few years ago. It took most of the day and was fascinating and well worth doing. The guide was a retired nuclear engineer and excellent. We lucked out as there had been a cancellation but I wouldn't count on that. Make a reservation well ahead of time. We also did an Oak Ridge tour fairly recently. I was impressed by all that Oak Ridge is doing now. My aunt and uncle worked there when it was a secret city. My grandmother got letters from them but did not know where they were. I think my uncle who was a civil engineer also worked at Hanford, although it may be he just visited there. He couldn't talk about it but did drop some cryptic hints. We want to go to Los Alamos next.

During World War II, scientists in St Louis, Missouri, produced nearly
one ton of uranium every day as part of the top-secret Manhattan Project.
