Okaaay. Eight feet of snow is 96 inches. Cetainly possible. It has happened before, but eight feet of snow from one storm?

If you are going to Tahoe, you need to leave the first thing tomorrow morning:

The weather service issued a winter storm watch from 4 p.m. Saturday to 4 p.m. Tuesday... Travel will be difficult to impossible, the service warned.

About time. The ski season seems a little late so it is good news to have this storm. The article says rain below 6000 ft so probably not as much snow in South Lake Tahoe but plenty up top.

The first few years after our marriage, DW and I lived in 2-story cabin near Lake Arrowhead. On a topo map, the 5280 ft contour went right by our house. We moved in summer 1974.

Our landlord showed us pictures of the house from the prior winter. After one storm that lasted for days, the first story of the house was completely buried in snow. The people who were living there exited from the second floor bedroom window, using snowshoes.

We dropped work and drove up last night to our cabin. Skiied today. Sunny, no wind with nice uncut powder in the trees. Great snow coverage. No crowds. Thursday must have had really awesome powder.

At my daughter's house in Truckee they received 65".

Soda Springs received 83" and they received 102" at Mt. Rose.

West Shore mid-lake (Homewood) received 67" that's a little over 5.5 feet on the peaks. So it appears that the most snow was received on the north rim (102" Mt Rose) with the least in the South Lake Tahoe Area (56"). The lake is about 25 miles long north to south. Lake level can receive less snow than summits, we have about 4 - 5 feet on our deck at lake level.

Power was out for a few days earlier in the week. We were concerned about pipes freezing without heater running so came up to check on home in addition to skiing. No damage thank goodness.

Another 95" (almost 8 feet - yikes!) is forecasted next week. Glad we are scheduled to visit again just after Christmas.

View from our webcam mounted 8 feet high on the rear deck of our cabin at lake level 6200 ft elev. (Yes this is all snow from the most recent storm. Normally this is a wide open view of the forest.) The roads have been closed for 2 days.

This is a screenshot from the webcam in my daughter's neighborhood. The sign on the left is the street sign. According to the neighbors they received three feet of snow last night. She and her husband are still trying to get home. They are currently stuck in Sacramento because the highways are still closed.

It is very realistic over several days. There was 5.5 feet of snow in the last storm. They measure the inches/feet of snow from the top of the mountain.

We live at a 1800 elevation about an hour west of Truckee. We got snow this week as well as in an earlier storm this year. We rarely get snow where we live. We are not there this week but we saw it on our webcam. When we do get snow, it is usually a brushing in Jan or Feb that melts by mid day. In the last storm, the snow stuck around for a day.

Does anybody know what the current situation is? I saw some of the advisories to stay away. Wasn't sure how long that was in effect for. I've been googling around.

We have a reservation in Tahoe starting tomorrow (Friday Dec 31). Trying to figure out if it is ok to drive up slowly or if we are getting in the way and should avoid Tahoe this weekend.

FYI. The resort advised to bring your own groceries, etc... Many of the groceries and gas stations are out.

@dlca1 (sorry, forgot to quote the post)

Pinned post has some good links for current conditions: https://www.reddit.com/r/tahoe/

And this was posted in the thread - looks helpful: http://oss.weathershare.org/?clat=38.54422&clng=-117.90751&zoom=8

My daughter/SIL had a tough time getting home to Truckee. It took two days from their last stop in Bakersfield. They had to spend Monday night in Sacramento, then spent all day Tuesday at the Park and Ride parking lot near Colfax waiting for Caltrans to open the 80. They were ready to go as soon as it opened up (around 3pm) and were finally able to get home. There is another storm forecast for early next week so the ability to get home will also be in play. No matter what, expect a lot of traffic and slow going and limited ability to get gas/food. I'm not sure what to tell you as I am in Southern CA. Locals up there will tell you to stay home, lol. Good luck.

As a side note, people, law enforcement, Departments of Transportation, etc are complaining about GPS software. Apparently, apps like Google Maps and Waze are sending drivers off I-80 due to the closure onto mountain roads that are dangerous. Google is saying they can't change the app. So, DOTs and police are saying DO NOT go anywhere near the mountain passes. If it says I-80 is closed, park it even though the apps say you can take back roads.

We drove up on 80 yesterday. Traffic was heavy, but 80 was clear and there were no problems. It only took about 45 min. more than usual, and it didn't snow yesterday or today.

We ended up driving up on Friday as well. We drove slowly. Traffic was light. Weather was beautiful over the weekend with a ton of snow.

This was also our first time staying at Tonopalo (traded via ThirdHome) at the north end of Lake Tahoe.

Really enjoying our stay. Is Lake front at north end of Lake Tahoe. Units are spacious and nicely decorated/well-appointed. I thought the units are nicer than Marriott South Tahoe timeshares and almost as nice as the Northstar resorts.

Very peaceful/relaxing. Kids had a blast snowboarding first time. With all the snow/powder, they were able to make snowmen taller than them right outside our unit.

We got a call from the front-desk this morning. They warned us that two units reported being covid positive.
