Major Southwest Credit Card Revamp- ~50% Annual Fee HIKE!

Good thing I already planned to cancel my card when it comes due again. I don't fly SW enough any more, and don't plan to use them unless absolutely necessary. An increase of $149 to $229 for me just isn't worth it.

I had the same thoughts and was waiting to see how it panned out. I would have considered a product change to a cheaper product but I don’t even think I want $99 a year.

I was done with SW when they started talking about all of the changes they would be making. They've already cut out nonstops to some of the routes we used so they are no longer a number one choice. I still have some miles and credits left with them so I may try to use those, but I can pay $35 to check a bag once or twice instead of paying $229 for that privilege.

My current card is $149/yr but they give you a $75 travel credit. Now it will be $229 with no credit.
I have a lot of travel credits to use so I’ll keep it one more year for the free bags, then I’ll probably downgrade. This card does have an option for premium seating at time of booking * if available * so I have to see if that is worth the extra money also.

I don't even want to downgrade. If they had a card with no annual fee I'd do it. SW, at least when I got the card, still charges a foreign transaction fee. I got a no fee Capitol One card for use when I traveled out of the country. I fly United more so that is the credit card I will keep. As I said paying $35 to check a bag is a lot more reasonable than paying $229 for the year.

Makes perfect sense. I have two cards. I am cancelling one for sure.

Southwest has lost most of my business, but I still have Miles to use, and I also have $$ invested.

My wife must have some old SW credit card as hers only has a $39 annual fee, which I don't see listed. I doubt it will get any of the new perks. She just earns 1 point per dollar for regular spend and 2 points for SW spend. An additional 3,000 points on her credit card anniversary.

They are just following the lead of other airlines. With the path many are taking they will just break even on flying. 100% of the profits are going to come from their credit cards and moving cargo.
