I think I recall a thread on this previously but can't find it in my searches.

Does anyone here own the Magic Bullet Blender and/or it's various versions? Is it of any use? Would you get it again?

I see it has a shipping weight of 14 lbs, which for traveling by air takes up a large amount of checked bag weight. Does anyone use one of these for traveling?

I've begun a weight-loss/nutrition plan which is based around food easily prepared at home. The key term here is "prepared." For travel it suggests taking a blender like this with you to whip up protein shakes on the road. Most of the timeshares I'm in have a full feature, albeit cheap blender in them...but I'm on the road enough in hotel rooms and other scenarios that I'm considering the Magic Bullet if it's worthwhile.

My DD bought one and said it was not worth it.

For blending protein shakes on the road you don't need a blender--unless you are blending fruit or other solid foods into it. If you are just mixing a protein powder mix with water you can use a shaker bottle. The ones with the stainless steel ball whisk work great. My neighbor's son invented that! I've seen them in Whole Foods and other stores.

We've had one (and are on our second) and find them handy. I like that it's small enough to tuck into a drawer and that the blender containers are smaller as well. Easy to use them to drink from and then put in the dishwasher. We use it for a variety of blending and chopping.

The problem with them long term is that the head that fits into the bottom of each container to actually turn the blade is plastic. If you try to blend something too hard or don't get it aligned well, that can crack. While it looks like it would be easy to replace, the manufacturer, of course, doesn't sell replacements.

They are cheap enough at Costco that we bought a second one, and use it fairly regularly. I have a regular blender, but in comparison it's too big to leave on the counter, and heavy to lift in and out of the cupboard. Plus the container is too larger for a single serve drink or chopping a small amount of nuts, for example.

DW is on her second one and swears by it and she's fairly particularly so I'd take it as a ringing endorsement. :D

I realized I didn't respond to your question about traveling with the Magic Bullet. When you purchase one, you get multiple jars and lids plus two blades in addition to the basic motor unit. For travel, you'd just need the basic motor and one jar and blade, so it would weigh much less than 14 pounds. It would fit OK in a suitcase if you really wanted to bring it along.

I don't have a mb, but several co-workers do. They really like it. I have a thunder stick that I love for blending protein shakes. Stick the thunder stick in a tupperware container (the kind for mixing salad dressing) and blend. The container can be used as your cup. Rinse off thunder stick and your good to go. I don't like lumps, so I love this stick. Costco has them for about $30.00, but I've found them at second hand stores for around $5.00. Just another kitchen gadget someone had to have and never used.

What about a stick blender instead.

A stick blender will do the job and they are much cheaper. Mine, which is about 6 years old, weighs 1.5 lbs (including the blending jar and lid). The jar holds over 16 fl oz.

I love mine because it's so quick and easy to clean. It does the job and doesn't take up much cupboard space. I don't even have a counter top blender because they are too cumbersome and I don't like equipment that has lots of parts (to assemble, store and wash). I use mine often for blending soups (while they are still cooking on the stove top) and making fruit smoothies .

I have one and tried to use it exactly once for chopping onions. It blended the onions into a pulp even though I tried to "pulse" the unit.

It's probably great for blender-type stuff, but chopping is a no-go.

For..

I have one and use it only for preparing smoothies and protein drinks. It works well for that.

You need to get the Slap Chop ;)

Have it, LOVE IT, am on my second one (wore the first one down). I have been a walking endorsement for it since I got it, enjoying my breakfast smoothies at work, walking around with my pink gloop in a cup with a lid. I have been the direct cause of many people buying them, and they've not been sorry.

Stick blender does not do the things that the MB does, like chop up frozen fruit for smoothies or soup veggies. Stick blender is fine for blending liquids but cannot do denser processing. Pulsing with the bullet is an art - it depends on how much of what you're chopping in which cup as to how your results are. Onions are soft, I can see mush being the result. I would not say that chopping is no go. It is my go-to gadget for prepping broccoli soup - I pulse for various size florets and part mush. But that's how I like my b soup.

It's fabulous for dips and salads. no need to buy pesto - make it from fresh ingredients! shred hard cheese, make hot dip, want chicken salad? dump in the leftovers and here's lunch ... I don't waste a lot of time chopping and stirring, which is good, as my wrists are becoming arthritic. bullet can do it faster and better than I can.

takes very little space, parts are dishwasher-safe and durable. Did I mention how much I've dropped things on my ceramic tile floor??

Want the new gadget, but will wait a while for price to come down. Need to see the info-mercial. But given how sturdy the MB has been (I've travelled with it extensively, dropped it, etc., and the first lasted many years with daily use and abuse), I would pop for this new gadget from them if only I had a place to store it. I'm sure I'll find that space when Costco comes out with a coupon for it ....

DW loves her MB. Uses it for her protein shakes which usually include strawberries or other fruit. Travels with it when possible. Just takes one cup and the required parts for what she needs. (Replaces the CPAP she no longer needs.)

Magic Bullet is actually really convenient... its not as "magical" as they make it look in the commercial, but it works as well as our full-sized smoothie maker / blender, only much more convenient to clean, store and travel with.

I love making individual smoothies for my wife and I since I like it a little sweeter than she does.

There's a great video review that pretty much tells it like it is over at infonotmercial.com:

Yep, I use my stick blender to make protein drinks everyday. :) You don't need an expensive blender to make them unless you really prefer them to have that thick taste. Right now because of the weather I am making most of mine hot.

Based on some of the replies, I didn't realize that "stick" hand mixers had jars and lids with them.

I guess I'll have to troll the isles of Target or Bed Bath & Beyond.

Stick blender.

1) Naming anything after the projectile that killed JFK and wounded Connally* is rather morbid.

2) The FAQ for the bullet mainly seems to answer questions of "why the heck doesn't this thing do what I want it to do." http://www.buythebullet.com/faq.php

3) A good stick blender is more portable and versatile. I rarely use a regular blender any more. I either use the stick or I break out the food processor. The blender gathers dust, and I have quite a good one.

* I do not believe in Arlen Specter's "magic bullet" theory. I wish Google Earth had a "Time Travel" feature, so I could peek behind the grassy knoll.

The Magic Bullet is nice for mixing in fruit. However, yesterday, TSA scanned it a total of three times, and attempted to take it apart. DW was able to carry on a 6' metal nail file, pliers, and end cutter pliers (nippers) with no problem but if the blender blades had been removable they would not have allowed it to be carried on. Something new or just a whim we don't know. Has never been a problem before. Just a heads up.

you can get knock offs much cheaper that the MB. they are just as good. The Rocket at Kohl's, another brand at Pennys and Macys. I have one and love it for smoothies!

MY DH loves it and we have used it for years. Kids make morning shakes, I make pesto in it, we take it on vacation. Fits well in a suitcase and I stuff the cups with travel items that I need in a timeshare (spices, olie oil, etc.) The kids can have their shakes at the pool and I can have my pina coladas. The manufacturer has replaced it for us for free when the blades stopped spinning. Lifetime guarantee.
