Looking for small, travel iPad charger

DW wants an AC charger to put in her iPad travel bag. Most of the chargers I'd seen (including the original iPad2 one) are very 'cube-ish'. I'd rather not have her have this huge lump sticking out of the bag.

I'm looking for something like the Kindle charger (attached image). It's relatively flat, so it has a nice low profile. Unfortunately the Kindle charger is only rated of 0.85A, and I think the iPad needs a full 1A in order to use it and charge it at the same time. Lesser powered USB chargers/ports will either charge it while it's off, or power it during use, but not both at the same time. [I have a Kindle charger, so I know it doesn't do both.]

I'd prefer to get a charger whose output is a USB port. That way, it can be used with other devices, and the separate USB to iPad cable can be used with a computer if needed.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jeff

Don't know of any specific chargers, but have you considered using 2 ports out of a standard USB charger into your iPad? Of course, this would necessitate carrying another (2 into 1 USB) cable.

It's an interesting idea, but I'm sure my wife wouldn't be too happy with that awkward looking cabling. To be honest, she'd be fine with a 2nd Apple charger. I'm the one looking for a nice solution.

The USB on your computer will not charge an iPad unless you install and run a program that boost the wattage output for the USB (this works and I have tried it). Unfortunately - I cannot remember the exact Run script, but I am sure you can google it.

Added - found it - http://event.asus.com/mb/2010/AI_Charger/

link discussing issue with charging iPads on PCs:

Also - the plug-in iPAD charger is very small and the prongs fold-in - so I just bring it with me as it also charges my iPhone (along w/ cord)

I just purchased a Vivitar power AC adapter. It has a flat, elliptical shape.

Not exactly correct. Just about any USB port (that puts out the standard 500mA) will either charge an iPad if it's off, or operate (but not charge) if it's on. [Charging though will take 2x a long, since it's only getting 1/2 the current of the Apple charger.]

I'd read about that modification. While it works on some systems, I've also read it can brick other motherboards. Not a risk I need to take.

Not so sure about that. We have an iPad 2, and it will not charge with a charger that I have for my iPod Touch. The only charger that will work is the one that came w/ the iPad 2.

The iPad comes with a 10-watt charger, the iPhone/iPod with a 5-watt charger. To charge the iPad with a lower wattage charger, it must be in sleep mode.

Jeff,

Check out: http://www.cellphoneshop.net/ipad2.html

Scoll down to see the chargers - will one of those fit the bill?

Price is right. By the way, I've been happy with various items, accessories I've ordered from them. Items come US Mail from Hong Kong.
