Hi everyone,

I own at Marriott’s Mountainside with two weeks (not points) and I’m starting to plan an exchange trip to Italy through Interval International. I haven’t joined Interval yet, so I have no Idea what is available, never mind what my ski weeks are worth.

We are hoping to travel in late September or early October 2026. I’m especially interested in Florence and Tuscany, and Venice.

Has anyone here successfully exchanged into resorts in these areas through II? I’d really appreciate advice on:
  • The best resorts you’ve stayed at
  • How easy (or hard) it was to get a match with a fixed week
  • Whether it’s smarter to split my two weeks for more options, or trade down from a 2-bedroom to a smaller unit to get something nicer
  • Tips or strategies for setting up a successful ongoing search for that time of year
And if there are any must-visit spots in Italy (besides Rome) that you think are worth considering, I’m open to suggestions.

Thanks so much in advance for your help!

Andy

Using Marriott weeks to exchange into your desired places in Europe are sketchy at best. You may get some preference at 'M' branded hotels around your chosen area. We find that cash is king. You may be better to save the TS stays for where you own and use cash to stay where you WANT to visit.

We don't stay at 'resorts' in Europe. Most resorts are out in the countryside. People LIVE in cities, so they sure don't want to vacation there.

As to must-visit spots in Italy besides Rome, gosh! what do you like? History? Go to Florence- again and again- Pompeii- good for a couple weeks alone. Naples for the pizza Cinque Terra to absorb Italian life. Barri to experience the early Christian time. Cruise from Venice to Athens to see the Adriatic and Greek Isles. You can use ferries at lower cost than cruise ships- but Greek cruises are reasonable.

Probably not many, if any, places to seek regarding timeshares. I think the true experience of Italy
will be diminished greatly by not staying in the heart of the towns and cities in more authentic places, and for less nights, which timeshares don't give you.
For instance we found amazing Airbnb's for our whole trip. First, after Rome, we stayed two nights in the fantastic
Cinque Terre town of Monterosso al mare (the largest and most interesting of the 5 hilltop towns of the Cinque Terre).
Couldn't have been more fun!!!.....much to see and do, and great restaurants, but two nights were plenty.
One evening we dined at the restaurant where Rick Steves dined....and talked about Rick with the Chef/owner and his wife and daughter.

We had a second story apartment that overlooked the street below. Very old, but beautiful and more like a family would have.
We felt more like residents than tourists.
Also same in Florence, where we stayed in the heart of the city, mere steps away from amazing restaurants, museums,
and many of the best historic sites. We were 10 minutes from the river & Ponte Vecchio. Our farthest walk was 18 minutes to see the statue of David,
and most of the other great things were 5-10 minutes away, like around the corner. It made the stay in Florence far more special.
We had a 2BR apartment (we had two couples) and a huge private terrace all to ourselves.
It was built in the 1600s. Our two favorite meals were 5 minutes away. Dozens of great restaurants. Again, we felt like citizens, not visitors.
We also decided to stay in Florence for four nights, so we could have a more relaxed and laid-back experience,
and do the amazing city justice. It was our most wise decision. All evenings we walked to a nearby piazza to people-watch
and sip the local wines and dine if we so desired. We hung out at least an hour or two each evening....just awesome.

I just felt like timeshares would not give us the experience we wanted, and I'll never regret that decision. Italy doesn't make sense otherwise, imho.
And frankly it'll be less expensive by doing the Airbnb's or VRBOs.
Our travel itinerary was Rome 3 nights > Monterosso 2 nights > Florence 4 nights > Rome 2 final nights.
(Got to fully see Rome's attractions ----Vatican, museums, Colosseum, smaller churches/cathedrals, and much more.)

We skipped Venice on purpose, and also skipped Pisa....no regrets on those. One couple we met did a day trip by train out of Rome to Venice,
saw what they wanted, and didn't have to add nights in Venice. Thought that was a great way to not let too many stops cloud the trip.
A lighter itinerary is always more enjoyable to experience day-to-day life in Italy.
I would heartily recommend October as the very best time to visit Italy (as you plan, I see!) ....perfect temps around 68 degrees at midday, and lovely cool evenings.
We did do a full-day tour of Tuscany, it was fantastic, and we saw 3 amazing towns and visited a winery and olive farm.
It was an awesome day, perhaps our best ever anywhere. Every day in Italy was great, tho.
Al fresco dining streetside was so perfect with the weather and the temps.......

Got a few recommendations for restaurants in Rome, Monterosso, & Florence !!!!

Go to intervalworld.com and click ‘explore and plan’ and then ‘resort directory’ to see what resorts are members of II- you don’t need an account or log in to see the directory.

Agree the the others TS exchange is not a good fit for this trip.
If you have a look at Venice for example you’ll see the resorts all say limited exchange an availability or getaways only.
Go with hotels or airbnb for this trip.

We rent out our TS and use a combination of Cash + Bonvoy points to vacation in Italy.

Have visited Europe for the last 3 summers [mostly Italy].

2023 [City/Hotel/Things-To-Do]
Rome: St Regis [Colosseum, Spanish-Steps, Trevi-Fountain, Vatican, Sistine-Chapel]
Venice: Gritti Palace [St Marks, Rialto, Murano]
Florence: St Regis [Pisa, Duomo, Tuscany, San Gimignano]
Lisbon: Penha Longa Resort [Betel, Cabo-Da-Roca, São Jorge Castle]
Barcelona: [Catalunya, Casa Batlló, Park Güell, Sagrada Família]
Paris: Price De Galles [Eiffel, Arc-Du-Triomphe, Notre Dame, Sacré-Cœur]

2024
Venice: St Regis
Padova: [St Anthony Chapel]
Genova: Grand Universe [Cinque Terre]
Lucca: Autograph [Cathedral]
Geneva: Ritz Carlton [Lake-Geneva, Chamonix + Mont Blanc/Matterhorn, Aiguille du Midi]

2025
Switzerland: Giardino Lago, Locarno [Bernina-Rail, Tirano > St.Moritz]
Milan: Duo Milan [Lake-Como, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Piazza Del Duomo, Navigli-District]
Genova: AC Hotel [Cinque Terre, La Spezia]
Catania: Oreta Palace [Agrigento: Valley of the Temples, Syracusa, Paschino, Mt Etna: Rifugio Sapienza]
Naples: Renaissance [Duomo / Mt. Vesuvius / Ruins of Pompeii + Herculaneum]

Marriott-Benefits
If you are a Platinum or Titanium, each room comes with free breakfast for 2.
We usually travel with 6-8 people so we book either 2-3 rooms.
The best part about Marriott in Europe is almost 80% of the time we received upgrades to Suites.

Driving
Most of the time we rent a car and drive.
The roads are awesome, speeds are usually 120-140kmph [some Italian drivers zip past us at even though we at doing 80+mph].
Need to be aware of speed-cameras. Most rental cars are stick-shift.

Train
This year we took the train from Catania --> Naples [about €50/PP 1-Way First-Class 7hrs trip].
The best part of the train experience was crossing at Messina where the train was loaded onto a ferry [3 trains total] for about 30 minutes.

Multiple CIties/Countries
To amortize the airfare we usually visit 2-3 countries on a Europe trip.
Italy + Spain + Portugal
Italy + Switzerland + France

II has better options in Italy via Getaways which aren't available via exchange, its unlikely that you'd get value for your deposit, even if you could get an exchange.

Given the variety of accommodation or other reservation platforms and limited choices in II, its not worth depending on, but take a look in case any of them suit your interests.

Thanks for all the great advice. After we make our reservations I’ll post them on Redweek.

Here's a huge thread I started asking some of the same questions:

As for accommodations, you're better off booking using cash or Bonvoy points.

I am looking for TS recommendations for a week. We have been to Italy before and don’t need local advice. I’m interested in trading into a place we can call home for a week.
We do airbnb quite a lot worldwide. We like not eating out every night. Having a parking space.
From what I hear there are a lot of timeshares all over Italy. I don’t need or want to stay in the heart of Rome. We want to go for up to 6 weeks and take it Slow.

You may get more help if you post in the II community.

And as I suggested above have a look at the II resort directory to see which TS they have available for exchange- many are limited exchange or getaway only. Have a look at reviews on trip advisor while you wait for replies to your posts.

If you do find some resorts you want yo exchange to the best technique is to place a request as far in advance as possible ( there are videos in the community to show you how to do this). Search the available inventory manual too while your request is pending.

I'll pop some info in the sightings forum for you on what is there now for exchange and Getaway. There isn't much, and nothing of quality that I would use an MVC deposit for, to exchange in II.
Getaways are a different matter, they are more available via Getaways so you pay $$ for them and they are OK priced.
This is a location where II is not a great solution, and certainly not one that I would recommend someone get an II account for, if they don't already use II.

What does get decent reviews from what I have seen is HGVC Borgo alle Vigne, but that isn't available via II, so you may need to look into another way to book that.
