This August we are spending our vacation week in Williamsburg , Va ( Governors Green) . I am just starting to really plan things out My husband has a 3-4 hour tolerance for driving, but I refuse to fly and rent a car for this trip. I really think we can drive. That said, I would like to hear some suggestions for some rest stops that might be interesting. I figure we can drive anywhere from 2-3 hours ( maybe 4 hrs) and stop somewhere, eat and change drivers. We may need to do that 2x. I don't want to just eat and drive I would like to do something -a museum? a historical site? anything that could be a diversion. Coming home will be a bit easier--when we leave Va we will be spending a few days in D.C ( Old Town, Alexandria) and that will only leave us with a 5 hr drive home. I would love to hear your idea.

Avoid driving on Interstate 95 South from Washington, D.C. to Williamsburg,VA on a friday afternoon between 4:00 PM and 6:00Pm traffic is awfully heavy.

We do this from north Jersey with one driver. Last time we went, we stayed overnight at a Residence Inn that was right by...be strong now!...a huge mall in Arundel Mills, Md. The hotel is a BWI airport hotel.

The mall has a 25-screen movie theater done in a fantastic ancient Egyptian theme. There's a 30-foot-tall statue of Ra outside and a big sphinx, and even the tile for the bathrooms is done in an ancient Egypt style. People were taking pictures! It was fun because it's like old-time movie palaces. The mall is an ordinary large mall with a big food court and the usual stores. HTH!

Passing by Philly?

LONG ISLAND TO WILLIAMSBURG...........not a direct route?????Philly seems to be west of this?

If you want to go really slow, it seems that you could drive down to Cape May, take the ferry, then drive thru Delaware, and take the Chesapeake Bridge-Tunnel.

Otherwise, Philly is about 20 mi. W. of the NJ Turnpike or I-295.

Please avoid the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel...Interstate 64 West Norfolk to Newport News / Williamsburg between the following hours 6:00 AM - 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM - 6:00 PM Monday thru Friday. This is a word warning.

Having lived in the DC area and done the north/south drive you're talking about a lot, I would suggest Baltimore as being about the best midway stop for a break.

Baltimore's Inner Harbor isn't too far off the course and has some nice dining options . . . I suppose for lunch.

MMMMMmm 5 hrs from Alexandria to Long Island? I don't remember it ever being that short a drive but it was over 20 years ago that I was driving it monthly for work.
