Three weeks from today we'll be flying to Heathrow from LAX with a change of planes to Stockholm. All flights are on British Airways. There is just over an hour between flights so I'm concerned about clearing customs and making it to the next flight. We arrive on a huge Airbus double decker plane and the next plane is a 737. Will they be in different terminals? Will we have to retrieve our luggage to go through customs & then recheck it?

You will remain airside at LHR and immigrate in Stockholm.

I always fly BA. They say allow two hours between flights. You may have to be bussed to the first gate. You may have to change terminals. You will have to go thru security. You get a Fast Pass if you are Business or First class. Terminal 5 has more than one building. Call them and question your timing.

An hour between flights seems a little tight but doable, especially if you land on T5 and depart from T5. IIRC, BA's flights to Stockholm depart from T5. You will still have to go through security at LHR, which sometimes is a breeze and sometimes it's not. I've been through LHR 4 times in the last 2 months, changing from T3->T5 or T5->T3 every time, and I can tell you than 1 hour would have been barely enough. Luckily I had more time between flights.

Personally I prefer at least 3 hours at LHR. But we tend to have children with us

We have done tlv lhr phx and tlv lhr bos. Both times we had to go through security, and change terminals.

I just spoke with BA and they said we arrive and depart from Terminal 5 so it should be okay--hopefully we'll arrive on time! The flights were arranged for us by Viking Cruises so if there's any problem I guess they'll take care of us.

If you look at flightaware.com , you'll see that the BA's LAX/LHR flights tend to arrive earlier rather than later. Since you'll be in T5, and your connecting flight is also in BA, I wouldn't worry at all. They'll put you in a later flight if needed.

I think you'll be fine. You'll be flying in and out of T5 so that's one less thing to worry abouts. Immigration can be a bit hit or miss, it depends on the flights landing around the same time as yours and if you are unlucky enough to miss your connection BA fly to Stockholm four times a day so you'll probably just end up on a later flight.

As for your luggage it should all be transferred for you.

If you spot a BA agent when you exit your first flight, tell them you have a tight connection. They may be able to help expedite your transfer.

Just wanted to report back on our experience at Heathrow. Although our arriving and departing flights were both in terminal 5, we still had to go through security again. It was really crowded and kind of nerve-wracking but, fortunately, the flight to Stockholm was late so we made it.

Coming back we had a longer layover between planes and things moved along a bit quicker than before--much less stressful.

I'm glad to hear it worked out for you. My daughter and I will be flying in August to LHR in AA, and then connecting to BA to Stockholm. However, we'll have about 3 hours to make the connection. Especially important since we will be landing at T3 and departing from T5.

Just watch the buses carefully if you have to change terminals...a friend just went thru LHR and almost got on the bus to the city rather than the other terminal...took an extra hour to get to the gate...
