That was an engine out landing, not a crash....

The pilot had control all the way to a safe landing. The difficult part was finding a place to land, but once that was done, the pilot flew the helicopter and didn't crash (meaning impact the ground out of control).

Had they had more room, and set down without extreme force or damage, OK.

CRASH: "collide violently with an obstacle." If I intentionally control my car into a brick wall at 30mph, no one would say it was not a crash.

Semantics aside, it was initially a controlled autorotation glide, but eventually a crash. It was a tough small spot to land, and it was a bit high over the beach. Pilot had to stall at the end (look at prop reverse), and it plopped (crashed) down. Otherwise would have slammed into the cliff.

NTSB initial report (not much here):

"The pilot immediately lowered the collective control and entered an autorotation to land at a nearby smaller, remote beach, known as Honopu Beach, as an emergency landing site. "An initial Federal Aviation Administration postaccident examination revealed that the overrunning clutch and engine-to-transmission driveshaft were fractured. "
