Legionnaires at Grand Islander

Yikes! Thanks for the heads up.

“DOH is aware of two confirmed cases of non-Hawaiʻi residents diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease following a stay at The Grand Islander. The first case was diagnosed in June 2021 and the second case was diagnosed on March 6 or 7, 2022.”

Interesting that this is happening with the MAX program about to roll out. Polo Towers, a DRI property, had the same issue with Legionnaires probably 20 years ago.

Update…
For those who don’t visit the TUG Hawaii forum, a 5th case was reported

We were just at the Grand Islander in mid June. I knew of the issue in advance, but didn't ask about it.. I just read in a one of the Facebook groups that some people have received a printed warning notice during the check-in process. I read everything, and we did not receive any type of notice or warning.

One of they facebook users that is currently staying in the grand Islander reported they got a notice that they were replacing all of shower heads and would need access to the unit. Not sure if that is connected to this or not.

“The bacterium can contaminate hot water tanks, shower heads, hot tubs and air conditioners, and is spread by breathing in mist that contains the bacteria. There is no vaccine for Legionaries' disease — cases are usually treated with antibiotics. “
