Learning A New Language? These Are The Best Free Apps Out There

I attended a presentation called Save Your Brain
prevention of dementia
1, eat well, follow combination of Mediterranean and dash diet called MIND diet
2, get moving, regular, vigorous exercise
3. stay sharp Learn a new skill, new language
4, be social
5, address hearing loss and sleep apnea, control chronic disease, stay hydrated.

I am a total loser with regard to learning a language. Still, there is was an article in the NYTimes (linked, but almost certainly behind a firewall) on the benefits of failing to learn French. The writer was as bad at learning languages as I am, but lists all the mental benefits he achieved by trying.

The available apps do make learning fun. (Much better than the "language labs" that became popular when I was in school.)

As far as the apps listed, Duolingo is the best. Memrise has some pros and cons. It is not entirely free, however. It lets you try it for free, but limits how far you can go. I also give Pimsleur mixed reviews, but it is not free. The other apps mentioned are foreign to me (pun somewhat intended).

I liked Duolingo so much that I happily paid the upgrade. I think it’s $89/year, but you can also learn something for free.

DW and #1 DS are both doing Duolingo Spanish, and with some success. I think. We'll see next month when we are in Spain. I'll muddle along with my Gringo Mexican Spanglish. Either way, I suspect we'll be fed and sleep indoors.

I've tried many Spanish programs and apps. I'm willing to try another as soon as I get bored with leaning guitar.
