Hi there I could really use some input from you guys! We had a water leak in our family room and in addition to the walls carpet etc our 10 year old 60" rear projection tv was damaged now we are looking into getting a new one but arent sure what type. The tv is 10 yrs old and was left by the prevous owners when it didnt fit in there new home. whatever tpye it needs to be a large screen because our room is fairly big and we have a bar at the end of the room and it would be nice if you could watch tv sitting at the bar. we have a really nice cabinet for the tv so we really dont want to hang it on the wall and would put it in the cabinet even if it was a flat screen We have a smaller 42" lcd hanging above the fireplace in the living room and had no prblems with it for three years. when we got this one... lcd's were the better choice rather than the plasmas now my husband says plasma's are better. we both are pretty much techno challenged and when i am down in the family room (rarely) after living in the house for three years i'm still calling him at work asking why the damn tv wont turn on :crash: The reviews on line vary depending on who you ask I heard the rear projection is being fadded out if so will it be difficiult find parts and fix if something happens to it.Are lcd and plasma's life span still pretty short and really expenive to repair? so over all whats the best type of tv to get and the best brand in that type
Thanks for helping

A few months ago I got rid of the same...a 10-year old 60" rear projection , just because it wasn't an HDTV, and I wanted one.
I LOVED that TV more than anything I've ever purchased in my life. Thought it was gonna kill me, because I loved the huge size, especially for sports.

Since I still wanted SIZE , I looked at more rear projection TV's, and decided on a 67" Samsung LED HDTV. The LED light will last a lot longer, and the picture is amazing. It was UNDER $2000.

I looked at both plasmas and LCDs, but the sizes for OVER 60" were just not available for under several thousand, like $4-7 thousand. All of the TVs have potential problems, but they're worth it........and everybody has a good opinion as to what's best, but they all have great pictures. For the price I'm ecstatic about my Samsung, and it's beyond wonderful. If you can still FIND one, I recommend mine for the price, and of course Samsung is top shelf.

We also have a 40+ in. LCD HDTV in our master BR.......it's awesome, and also a smaller 20+ in. LCD HDTV in our kitchen, but for sheer size over 60", I love the 67" Samsung rear projection in our den. It's very sleek and thin, very high-tech looking.

Yeah, they're being faded out, but just come over sometime and SEE it, but soooo sorry, you cannot have mine.........and for what I paid, I don't care what happens to it in a few years........I'm gonna enjoy it.......good luck, jme

Well, there has been a lot of discussion on this and we were part of that, too- after all inquiring minds DO want to know. Basically we figured out rear projection best bang for the buck but has some limitations (side views and phase out); plasma best colors but expensive in smaller sizes under about 45 inches; LED wound up being our choice (we went with a 42 inch Samsung which was not as good as the Sony Bravia but $400 dollars cheaper.) That's our story, short and sweet but a Forum Search should get a LOT more input. Just make sure you have a couple HDMI inputs so you can enjoy blu-ray and Dolby sound-if you plan to watch DVDs at home (saving money on popcorn). Also, you may have to decide whether you need 1080i or 1080p and whether it's worth it. Ow, my head is starting to hurt. Gotta go!

We bought a plasma before Christmas at a very good price. Plasma prices seem to be coming down, but I haven't kept track after buying.

We bought it at Circuit City and the price seemed to be designed to lure you into the store so they could switch you to another size or brand that cost more. We just happened to be looking at that brand and that model so we bought.

One advantage to plasma is you can sit at an oblique angle and still get a good picture. With our rear projection, that was not possible.

HTH:)

I'd definitely narrow the choice to plasma vs. lcd.

At first lcd was considered better than plasma, when the early plasmas had burn-in (retained ghost images) problems. Advantage lcd.

Then the plasma burn-in problem was eliminated in later sets, while lcds had problems with fast-moving images leaving trails. Advantage plasma.

Then lcds were improved and became practical even for larger screen sizes, and at lower power consumption. Advantage lcd.

So your best bet now is to go to Costco or somewhere else where both systems are on display, look at the colors, definition, field of view, and make your own decision. [For me plasma was better because I liked the colors and field of view.]

Read this Article

Gary Mersen is a true expert in HDTV. Here is a recent article on Panasonic Plasma. Read it and decide for yourself. I have a panasonic plasma and LOVE IT. IMHO is has a much better picture than my friends high quality LDC. Read the article and decide for yourself. This is a really good source for info.

We bought a 42" Panasonic Plasma about two years ago & we love it. I only wish we went even bigger!!!
Good luck with your decision.
