There was an interesting news story about my favorite casino, South Point in the Las Vegas Review Journal today. You can read about it here.

We plan to check it out the first full week of March, may you can meet us for lunch one day?

We'll be there that week as well, staying next door at Grandview. Coffee, or ?

We too are at the Grandview the week starting May 14th. A bit reason why we're staying off strip is the high praise the Southpoint has gotten on TUG. Better access for a bit of slot play than hiking the strip this trip.

We're there for our daughter's wedding and will have our grandson quite a bit so I expect we will be pretty busy but are looking forward to it.

That is a good article. We just received an invitation for New Years at the South Point. We also have invitations for New Years from several others but will most likely stay home or go to Agua Caliente Casino/Resort in Rancho Mirage, CA. We just got back from 3 nights at Agua Caliente last week.

You'll be there the same week? Maybe we should have a mini-TUG thingie. The buffet is always good for that cause you can hang out as long as you want. Let's plan something.

Bev,
You'll like it. They also have a bingo parlor and play on the odd hours if you are interested.

I forgot to mention, South Point also has a LIVE radio show on Thursday afternoons at 2 PM. The doors open at 1 PM, and you need to be in line by 12:30. You get your FREE tickets at the box office. There are usually four performers as well as the host. It is mainly singers and perhaps one comedian. Sometimes one of the acts is whoever is going to appear at South Point's Showroom that weekend. There are also drawings for restaurant certificates to South Point with tickets they give you as you enter, and you are not pressured to buy a drink.

It sounds great! I want to go, too. Another cool thing at Southpoint is the movie theater--Monday through Friday before 4 p.m. seniors with a players card get in for $3. I'm going this afternoon with one of my girlfriends.

How about Wendesday, March 9, 2011?
The local gal's might get lucky two weeks in a row. We'll be there a week ahead of you. I was afraid of that when I re-read your post that you'd be in LV the 1st full week of March. We'll miss you.... Jim

After all of the good things I heard on TUG about South Point, we tried it in Oct. The buffet at lunch was horrible. Not one thing I tried was good. I am not a picky eater at all. It was by far the worst experience of our trip. We even had horrible luck gambling there. Played video poker, slots and black jack. Lost, lost , lost.

I guess we should have tried something other than the buffet, but at lunch time, many were not open.
As for the gambling, sometimes you win sometimes you lose, but as for the food, they should be ashamed to sell such slop. I did not have any coupons and paid full price for it to. Biggest regret of my trip.

I had to try it because of all of the great reviews, but I will not return on future trips to Vegas I don't think. So many great things to do in Vegas, no need to go there.

Overall, our trip was fantastic, we were there 7 days and that was the only bad experience. Not too bad at all.

I certainly agree that their buffet is nothing to rave about. Buffets are not a big deal for us so it is not that big a negative. You could have eaten lunch at their Coronado Café which is open 24 hours. It is quite good and there are other options you could have chosen.

As far as gambling goes, that is just the luck of the draw. You have to be in the right place at the right time regardless of how loose the slots are. Video Poker is the only game that you can tell what the payback percentage is by looking at the pay-table. Over the long run, playing at South Point will yield a better result than any strip casino because they are looser. However in the short run, it all depends on choosing the right machine at the right time.

On one of our trips last year, we did better at Caesar's Palace than elsewhere though the slots are tight at Caesar's. We played there because we were staying there for a few nights for a special event.

I guess it depends on what you eat there, cause I know I've never had any slop. I generally have shrimp or crawfish (love them mudbugs, but they's messy and I gross out folks if I suck da heads), tomales and taquitos if they have them, guacamole, and mongolian stir fry. I also usually have some blue cheese and crackers.

I generally don't have dessert there, cause there really isn't much to it.

We have sort of given up on buffets, though we still go, just not as often as we previous have done.

While I wouldn't consider the South Point buffet to be top of the line, I have never thought it was slop.

To me most buffets aren't anything to really rave about.

I was the guest (thanks to a very gracious host  )at the M buffet a few weeks ago and I couldn't understand why people rave about it. To me it really wasn't much different than most buffets, though it sure did cost more.

It was nice to go there, just to see what all the hoopla was about, but to me it was just another buffet. They are what they are, easy food, reasonably priced, lots of choices.

To each his own, but I've never been disappointed with the M buffet. We don't go at night or on the weekends, though. The lunch price is $14.99 and well worth it, IMHO.

Well, again to each his/her own, but the only way I felt it was worth it was by being on a locals 2/1 lunch discount coupon (which my host had and used). :)

I just can't see a lunch for two at a buffet being worth $30, without the discount....but again everybody has their own opinions. :)

Rick,

I agree with you 100%. We have stayed many times at the Paris and have never understood why people think their buffet is so good. My wife and I don't like it. The only reason we eat there occasionally is because it is convenient and quicker than eating at the restaurant.

Actually the best buffets we have eaten at have been non-casino buffets like the Westgate Hotel in downtown San Diego or the 4 Points Sheraton in Pleasanton, CA. John Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks, NV ( Reno metro area ) is very good. The new Harrah's Rincon ( San Diego ) buffet is pretty good.

Normally we prefer to eat in the restaurant or room service. For dinner, we prefer the Steakhouse.

We thought the Coronado Cafe was quite good. Surprisingly good Chinese food!
