Does anybody know what the access is like to the station by the LVH Hotel for a person with limited mobility?

We're taking my wife's parents to Vegas in November, using our HGVC (Hilton) points. We always stay at the HGVC Flamingo location, especially since MIL can't hobble around too well. HGVC Flamingo had no 2BRs open, so I tried to get 2 1BR units. Got the first one, then the system started erroring out. That was Sunday. When I got a rep on Monday, all the additional 1BR units were gone, in addition to the 2BR units.

What I've done in the mean time is reserve a hotel room at the Flamingo Hotel for the wife and I. But the HGVC rep suggested getting a unit at the Karen Ave (next to LVH hotel) site, which still has 2 BR units open (fewer points than 2 x 1 BR units). She suggested that we just use the monorail to get around.

Now, that sounded good to me. But my wife points out that her mom, who very recently got a hip replacement, can't climb stairs, or even escalators very well. And the monorail stations tend to be at the very back of hotels (i.e. when we visit other properties on the strip).

So, does anyone know how well my MIL could get from HGVC next to the LVH, and get up to the monorail station? And use that to get to various strip casinos?

Thanks,
Bob

We just left Vegas on Saturday morning and the best public transportation on the strip is the public bus.

They stop at just about every casino on the strip and it is must more accessible to the casino's than better than riding the monorail and it is cheaper. A three (3) day pass was only $28.00, per person.

This is only person opinion who loved to walk the strip and enjoyed the architecture building on the strip .

I would walked from the Venetian Resort to the MGM Resort in the morning and back before noon.

Check monorail access with HGVC - Flamingo

Several years back when I was at the HGVC-Flamingo you could access the "secret" elevator that was near the drive-up door. The elevator wasn't really labeled, but if you put in your room card it would open for you. Definitely double check with the front desk staff to make sure the elevator is still there, and that it is manageable for a person with limited mobility. I seem to remember saving myself some walking by cutting through a flower bed and jumping off a two foot wall! The proper walkway might add 50 yards to the distance from the HGVC drive-up door to the elevator. The "secret" elevator was a lot closer than going up the switchbacks that are open to the public.

Bob, how about renting MIL a scooter? I'm quite sure the monorail is accessible, but it can be some distance from the casinos/restaurants at the front of the hotels.

My recollection with the exception of the LVH all of the stations are at the back of the properties

You are correct in your statement; all the monorail stations are in the back of the resort properties and it still required a good walk to their properties

This is way we liked the public bus service and they are ADA accessible. You can catch a bus from Mandalay Resort to old Vegas and see the Fremont Experience.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! Jim, the scooter is a very good suggestion; one that makes a lot of sense. Which is why my MIL will never go for it! :hysterical: Seriously, she's very stubborn and proud, and would bristle at the suggestion she'd need one. Heck, she ignored doctors orders at every step after the hip replacement. Got on her feet too soon, discarded the walker too soon, and now goes without the cane that he explicitly said she has to use for the rest of her life. No, she'll never go for a scooter.

Similarly, thanks Pedro, but she won't use a bus either. Heck, we can't even get them to use Seniors buses to get around their home town.

I agree that the monorail goes to the very back of all the casinos, so may be too inconvenient for her. I think I've answered my own question. We'll probably keep the 1BR unit we have at HGVC Flamingo, plus the hotel room at the Flamingo hotel for DW and I. It's still over two months away, so there's a good chance another unit at HGVC Flamingo will open up between now and then. And if not, we'll stick with a hotel room and let MIL and FIL use the timeshare unit.

Bob,
Rent a car, and if you are going anywhere more than one casino away, drive the back way, then valet the car. It will make for a much smoother visit.

Thanks Fern. I was hoping you'd chime in. Yes, I've reserved a car, and was planning to chauffeur them around when possible. But MIL and FIL love to sneak off on their own, without the "kids" looking over their shoulders (60 year old kids :D ). So we need to be close enough that they feel they can do so. Still, I appreciate the tip.

Good morning Fern, what is going in with the dam flooding old Vegas ?

The flooding has been the worst in memory this year. We are way over normal now. The current rain hit Rick's area even worse than mine. Rick (Ricoba) started a thread in Western, subject begins YIKES. I put a link there to a big slideshow from one of our news stations. Well worth looking at.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I've now managed to snag a 2nd 1 BR unit at HGVC Flamingo, as I was hoping. So we're together now, center strip. We can chauffeur them around when wanted, and they can wander off on their own when they feel like it. All's well :)

That's good Bob. :)

As you know driving here isn't too bad, except of course around the Strip where you are! ;) But a car is still the best way to transport folks who hobble around, especially since parking is free or you valet which is cheap and in my view the best option almost always.

Have fun. :)
