I can't boot up my Dell laptop, get the following message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attemp to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

We have moved since I purchased this computer several years ago and I can not find the CDs for it.

Any suggestions? Sure have backed it up, but kept putting it off.

If you have another pc You can download the disc for free online and then burn it(your original cd key is a sticker under your laptop), or you can call dell and have them send you a copy. If the repair function doesn't work and you have your data(and drivers!) backed up just do a fresh install.

Dell can also provide you with drivers discs

A rebuild with a Windows XP cd using system repair should fix the issue. You can also boot to a Windows XP cd & run CHKDSK /p to force a disk repair. Often times that will clear that error without a full reinstall. Good luck.

You might need to re-install windows. Most computers that are fours years old or less have a windows install program on the hard drive. When you boot up, you will see a code and on HP it says F11. On Dell, I think it is F0, or F Zero. If it is available, you should see it when you boot up and it is pretty easy after that.

If you need your old data, you will probably need to call a computer expert for help. Or, go to Best Buy and get charged a small fortune at Geek Squad.
