I felt this deserved it's own thread, since the guide was that good!
We just got back from Maui and had asked about a day trip to Lanai. People had recommended Trilogy, but they stopped offering an island tour as part of their snorkeling excursion. The snorkeling beach that they frequent is a few minute walk from the pier, so if you have your own snorkel equipment (or have rented from Snorkel Bob on Maui for the week) you can easily take the ferry for$66 each way pp.
The only negative we experienced is I made the mistake of asking one of the Trilogy employees on the beach, setting up before the boat arrived, where the better snorkeling was, and he told us by the sandbar to the right would be better- the water would be calmer and clearer that day, so I listened. He lied to us, surprisingly- the better snorkeling is to the left. The staff from the Four Seasons on the beach felt so badly we were told that. Didn't matter, though, since the water was rough and murky. Even the snorkeling tour, which came in a little later, stayed out for awhile but most came in within a short period and I guess spent the remainder of the trip on the beach. A real negative if you travel to Lanai and the water isn't good for snorkeling that day, which happens.
We arranged for a private tour with John, He does the Lanai Jeep Rentals, but has started giving tours, which I highly recommend. He offers 4 or 6 hours tours, and it's just your party, so he fashions the day around your interests. He's personable and informative, and we had a great day. I wouldn't recommend just renting a jeep for a few reasons- some of the terrain is really different, and to go there you should have someone who knows where he's going. Lots of hunting on the island, ad I'd want to make sure I wasn't inadvertently wandering into their boundaries.
You can call or text John at 808-280-7092. The ferry and his fee was less than the Trilogy tour and so much more, unless you just want a snorkeling tour and barbecue lunch. If I was spending the hour plus to go to Lanai I wanted to see the island; it's very different and definitely worth seeing, although I wouldn't go for an extended period.
