  • Indonesia's Disaster Mitigation Agency said at least 220 people have been confirmed killed in the tsunami
  • 800 more people have been injured after the wave hit beaches around the Sunda Strait and 30 are missing
  • It is believed the wave was caused by seismic activity from the volcanic eruption on nearby Krakatoa
  • Pilots operating in the region have been warned about a volcanic ash cloud spreading from the eruption site
  • Boy band Seventeen were performing when the tsunami struck killing two members and two crew
  • Lead singer Riefian 'Ifan' Fajarsyah survived and the band's drummer is missing along with a member's wife

At least 220 people have been killed and 800 injured after a tsunami struck beaches in Indonesia overnight.

A further 30 people are still missing after a volcanic eruption caused a deadly wave to crash over a pop concert where band Seventeen were playing on Saturday evening, sending people fleeing for their lives.

Two members of the band, the guitarist and the bass player, have been confirmed dead, along with the road manager and a crew member, while the drummer is missing.

Seventeen's bassist M. Awal 'Bani' Purbani, road manager Oki Wijaya, guitarist Herman Sikumbang and crew member Ujang, all died the lead singer Riefian 'Ifan' Fajarsyah said.

The 20 foot high wave hit beaches around the Sunda Strait, between the islands of Java and Sumatra at about 9.30pm local time, destroying 430 houses, nine hotels and 10 ships.

Scientists say the tsunami was probably caused by the eruption of Anak Krakatau, a volcanic island formed over years from the nearby Krakatau volcano. The Meteorology and Geophysics agency also said tidal waves may have been strengthened by the full moon.

Undersea landslides from the eruption of Anak Krakatau - an island formed from previous blasts from Krakatoa - were recorded 24 minutes before the tsunami struck.

Prayers to those with family there:

The day death rose from the deep: At least 281 are dead after 'Child of Krakatoa' volcanic eruption causes underwater landslide that sent 20ft tsunami sweeping into tourist resorts
  • The tsunami destroyed hundreds of homes, hotels and businesses on the beach
  • Survivors described running for their lives as 20ft waves swept everything away
  • It comes 14 years after the Boxing Day tsunami in which more than 227,000 died

Fears are growing that more tsunamis could be triggered by Indonesia's erupting Anak Krakatau volcano.

At least 281 people are known to have been killed after a giant wave destroyed hundreds of homes, hotels and businesses along tourist beaches in Java and Sumatra on Saturday.

Many hundreds more were injured and the death toll is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.

Authorities in Indonesia believe the tsunami was triggered after Anak Krakatau – 'child of Krakatoa' – erupted, 14 years after the Boxing Day tsunami that killed more than 227,000 across South East Asia.

At least 281 people are known to have been killed after a giant wave destroyed hundreds of homes, hotels and businesses along tourist beaches in Java and Sumatra on Saturday

Water came rushing ashore in the darkness, with no prior shaking of the ground to indicate the crushing force that was closing in on the victims.

Survivors described running for their lives as waves up to 20ft tall swept away everything in their path. Musicians from a popular boy band were among those killed when the massive wave hit while they were onstage at a beach concert, hurling them into the audience before sweeping them out to sea.

Yesterday bodies were washed back on to the shore and others were discovered inside the wreckage of their former homes.

This a tragic story, that is not over with that volcano acting up; solid lava is displacing the ocean waters creating 10 to 12 feet waves heading to Indonesia.

Tsunami Has Killed Hundreds But Krakatoa's Massive Eruption in 1883 Rocked the World
By Meaghan Tobin/ Volcanoes/ Asia/ Southeast-Asia/ South China Morning Post (SCMP)/ scmp.com

  • "The force of the explosions during the 1883 eruption was reportedly 10,000 times stronger than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima
  • The eruption sent a plume of ash 27km into the air, affecting weather patterns across the globe for years, and plunging the surrounding area into darkness for days

At least 429 have died and 1,300 have been injured as a result of Saturday’s tsunami, which has displaced thousands from coastal communities in Java and Sumatra.

On August 27, 1883, the tiny volcanic island Krakatoa in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra blew itself into the history books, altering weather patterns around the world for years, killing an estimated 37,000 people, and inspiring the creation of an enduring work of art.

Indonesia remains one of the most tectonically active areas on Earth and is currently home to 127 active volcanoes. Much of the archipelago itself was formed by the shifting of three immense continental plates, causing islands to emerge out of the ocean floor.

Anak Krakatoa, “child of Krakatoa” rose in 1928 from the caldera blasted into the ocean during the eruption of its namesake. It has been erupting sporadically since, rising to its current height of about 300 metres above sea level as a result of lava flows......"

Just shows you can’t stop the occurrences of certain disasters. They have happened before and will continue happening. We like to think we have control, we don’t.
