Just came back from Ko Olina. The resort is beautiful, location is perfect, enjoyed sunsets, pools and lagoon. However, i saw cockroaches from the day 1. when i opened a dishwasher, about half an inch size cockroach was in there, alive. I quickly closed the door and ran the steam cycle. Hoped there was no other cockroach. I know there are huge roaches which is called palmetto bug in tropical area, and they live outside but occasionally fly in and makes people scared.
the cockroaches i saw in the kitchen was NOT that kind, they didn’t fly, they were very lively and fast. They came down from the back of kitchen cabinets and were everywhere. I killed 4, my kids killed 3, and one was on the dining table one day.
I called the maintenance and asked to spray to make them go away. While they were spraying the chemical inside and under the cabinets, they killed one more.
the spay was useless, i saw them every morning and evening. It was really stressful.
my son said they are better than bed bugs, easy to see and they don’t bite.
I have two more reservations at Ko Olina, back to back weeks and not sure should i stay there again with cockroach problem. Maybe i will stay at Hilton Hawaiian Village instead.
When i stayed at Marriott Maui Ocean club, i saw the same kind cockroaches in the shared kitchen area on the first floor where guests use stoves. Even though i saw cockroaches in the kitchen, i didn’t see any in my unit and it didn’t bother me that much.
i just checked tripadvisor reviews about Ko Olina and surprised that no one complained about the cockroaches. Maybe that’s normal for Hawaii resorts?

Ugh! We also had cockroaches while we were there a few years ago. They had to evacuate our floor to spray and we lost 2 days of our vacation. Their response was less than adequate - rather than refunding our fees or moving us to another room (they said they had none), they offered us one day in a mini- cabana - hardly a good resolution.

We were on a bottom floor in the Naia building. Were you on a higher floor?

Where did you go for 2 days?

We had to leave the room for each day. We drove and took a long hike and went to the beach for the day in the mini-loungers they gave us. I wonder about the effects of the pesticides in sleeping at night there. Plus our food and belongings were still in the room exposed to pesticides.

This is concerning to me. I don’t deal with bugs at all. I recently asked about this very thing at Sheraton Broadway Plantation after reading outside reviews that mentioned roaches and bed bugs. This is really unacceptable given the money Marriott makes off of these resorts. I would say it possibly has to do with covid and worker shortages but then there appears to be problems dating back before covid. Pest control is not an area that should ever be cut back because problems can get worse very fast.

The cockroaches are common all over Hawaii. You can usually lesson the severity but getting rid of them is extremely difficult.

@frank808 stays there much of the year, maybe he can comment on how common that is. We very rarely see them at any resort.

We have rarely seen them at other HI resorts. My theory is that they are more prevalent on the bottom floors of this resort. I am not sure if @frank808 stays on these lower floors since he is an elite.

Hawaii has cockroaches. My definition of a good hotel and a basic one was that at a good hotel the staff would take care of spraying for them, at a basic hotel they just leave the bug spray out for you.

In my job. I work with the largest pest company on the Islands. When I first arrived here, I noticed difference’s between here and my warehouse in Wisconsin. I went over all that with my current pest company.
He is extremely knowledgeable and has accounts at all the major hotels, resorts and complexes. You may not always see them but they all have cockroaches to some degree. Of course, some worse than others for various reasons.

Seems to sort of be true, you peaked my curiosity and read about that theory a bit. Seems to be somewhat true, though they can easily exist top floor also. You're right about Frank, lol.

Some people get freaked out if they see a dead cockroach. Me? That tells me that the timeshare's pest control company is doing its job. Live cockroaches? Ah... I don't like them either. But they thrive in the tropics....

If flies, ants or roaches will ruin your trip, don't go to any tropical places including HI, the Caribbean or FL. I've always had a reasonable response at MVC resorts (and others generally) when such issues cropped up.

We haven't seen them at Ko Olina (including a ground floor room) but had one drop from the ceiling onto my arm (while in bed!) at Kings Land on the Big Island. That was a second floor room, fwiw. The front desk was unimpressed. A person was sent to spray the room. The worst we have ever experienced was in a Waikiki hotel on our honeymoon in 1983 - that was a total invasion and we were on a relatively high floor. I hate roaches and luckily have only seen them twice in all of those years so the odds are in your favor. But just keep it in mind when you say that you want an authentic Hawaiian experience when you travel to the islands ;)

Well I guess I have just been lucky thus far, as I have never seen roaches at any hotel/resort in Hawaii, FL, or the Caribbean.

I was actually expecting you to say "Welcome to Hawaii" :)
We're fortunate we don't have a cockroach problem at our house. Can't say the same about geckos though...although I'm sure they quickly regret it as they scamper to evade our dogs.

Don't forget about them crawling out from under a seat in a rental car!

We saw some ants once at a timeshare in the BVI, but that's the only bug issue I can remember. If we had them when we were in Hawaii, I must have blocked it from my memory, LOL!

When I was on Maui, first trip ever to Hawaii, with my parents in 1968 we went to dinner at the Plantation House. Back then it was in the middle of nowhere, now it's in the middle of the Kapalua resort area. While we were at dinner I saw several cockroaches crawling around on the fireplace.

We have had roaches at many stays in Hawaii. Only once in Maui on the first floor did we feel there were too many. It was ridiculously over ran. We arrived late so we did spend the night with them. We took bonus time at a different resort for the rest of that week. A few other resorts had baby roaches or a roach.

I haven't yet seen a roach in Mexico. :) Maybe they use the good stuff to kill them, idk.

Bill

We had none in late summer at Waiohai or Kauai Lagoons, bottom floor at Lagoons too.

Well there goes my theory about the bottom floor.

We also stayed on the bottom floor at Kingsland on the BI and saw none there. Alhough there was a feral cat and visiting geese on our stoop.
